Yesterday saw the 128th Groundhog Day festivities.
Sun Prairie, Wis., mayor Jonathan Freund held up Jimmy the groundhog, after Jimmy had come out of his hole without seeing his shadow, thus predicting an early spring.
Everything went according to legend, lore and tradition with the exception that Jimmy the groundhog decided to munch on the mayor’s ear.
The mayor was a good sport, however, and said afterwards, “It’s a great tradition. It brings a lot of people out to Sun Prairie…I was hoping not to get bit, but certainly not nervous at all.”
Why do I mention this incident a day later?
Well, today — the day after Groundhog Day — Republicans in the House continued their Groundhog Day chicanery tradition by voting for the umpteenth time — close to the 60th time — to either undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act.
They have been doing this for four years since the law’s passage in 2010.
At this rate, they will beat the number of Groundhog Day celebrations in another four years.
That is, if they don’t get bitten by the proverbial groundhog in a place where the sun doesn’t shine on that day — a place where the Groundhog cannot see its shadow, predicting an early spring for America.
