I am a big fan of science fiction. I am a big fan of the works of Orson Scott Card. He is a social conservative and I agree with him on virtually nothing. But his Sci Fi is damned good and I have read and enjoyed his work. I have read every book Ender series more than once. It’s great fiction that addresses many social and political issues. That is why this upset me.
The ‘Ender’s Game’ Boycott
The film “Ender’s Game” tells the story of a gifted child sent to a military academy in space to prepare for an alien invasion. It’s catnip for the Comic-Con crowd, and Lionsgate Entertainment wants to position it as November’s big-budget blockbuster. But the studio is encountering an unexpected publicity nightmare: an activist group called Geeks Out is pushing a boycott of the film, claiming that anyone who pays to see it will effectively be subsidizing antigay “fear-mongering.”
I think this is misguided. Orson Scott Card may be a conservative Mormon but his Enders series has nothing to do with that. I look forward to the movie although I doubt it will as good as the book. The works of Mr Card are valuable philosophical commentary and should not be boycotted.
Update
I see my old bogging partner Jazz Shaw agrees.
