The Romneys’ Hot Mic Moment: Refreshing Candor or Cynicism?

Not for general reporting comments made by presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney and his wife Ann Romney were overheard and reported on. Did the comments show refreshing candor or outright cynicism and a penchant for hiding positions from the public? Here is a roundup.

I think cynicism is the operative word here. It doesn’t paint either Romney in a particularly flattering light. I’m still waiting for “hot mic” moments that are intentional.
A roundup of opinions from Steve Benen at the Maddow Blog, Comedy Central, DailyKos, and Time. Yeah.
Anyway I have to wonder if Romney did this accidentally on purpose. It’s not like he was using the cone of silence, he was speaking outdoors to a gathering of supporters and I find it hard to believe his staff didn’t notice reporters listening in.
To the extent this brings out some more concrete proposals from Romney it was a good thing. We need all the transparency we can get. What’s disappointing is that he is playing this game where carefully crafted images take the place of honest policy discussion.
Well, it’s not like Fox News is going to give it honest coverage. Besides, when confronted with the reality of the details of what Romney’s policies would entail too many voters would turn against the GOP for him or very many of his backers to win election.
