Today I would like to suggest movies for your enjoyment.
Most of us have seen the James Cameron epic and I am certainly not going to deny the special effects wizardry of the film, and it does make an effort to tell the history.
But in my humble opinion it is more of an romance/drama that happens to involve the Titanic rather than the story of the Titanic with some romance or drama as a vehicle.
If you want drama and some history of the Titanic check out the 1953 film Titanic, starring Clifton Webb, Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Wagner. It’s B&W and doesn’t have the 1990’s CGI but it tells the story in a more detailed manner with the story of a family as the vehicle.
If you want to see the (IMHO) best film on the subject check out A Night To Remember from 1958, based on the Walter Lord book of the same name. It is generally considered to be the most accurate of the films.
It does not have the same level of drama as the other two and does not add any new characters for the viewer to focus on, so it’s a bit deeper of a watch. But it covers the history in great detail and puts you right in the place of the real people.
Both are available on Netflix, Titanic will be on Cinemax this month and A Night To Remember will air this month on Turner Classic Movies.
