As the United States nears the August 2 deadline for raising its astronomical debt ceiling, much of the world is watching with dismay. Frankfurter Rundschau columnist Thomas Spang writes that Tea Party lawmakers are close to achieving what America’s enemies ‘have only dreamed of.’

Not even warnings from the [financial services] industry are taken seriously by the radicals. An inability to pay does not exist. That was an invention by Obama. In his statement culminated the same denial of reality that has made moderate conservatives homeless since the days of George W. Bush. Today’s right-wing spokespeople don’t “believe” in climate change, think evolution should be taught as a “theory,” and stir doubts about whether Obama is a “real” American. While much of this can be shrugged off with a grin, bankruptcy threatens real consequences. The Tea Party could succeed in doing what America’s enemies have only dreamed of: driving the U.S. to ruin.
