They did it. House Republicans passed a budget plan that eliminates Medicare and Medicaid while giving the military a pass and handing huge tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans.
Obviously, this was expected, and yes, as TheHill.com puts it, the bill will be “dead on arrival” at the Senate, and of course, if it somehow got through the Senate, Pres. Obama would veto it — but knowing and actually seeing are two different things.
Democracy Corps’ riff on that iconic NY Daily News headline says it all: “Paul Ryan to Seniors: Drop Dead.”
And stupid, man. I mean, really, sub-basement-level stupid. Ginormous percentages of Americans support Medicare and Medicaid (in fact, most Americans overwhelmingly support all of the programs that Republicans in Congress want to defund), and oppose making significant changes to those programs — and those percentages obliterate party affiliation.
Still, I can’t be too upset about that. Republican stupidity is going to make me very happy on Election Day, 2012.
