Very Poor Inner City Voter Turn-out, as I have looked at it, is the major demographic trend that led to the demise of Hilary Clinton in 2016. Ms Clinton missed the 270 required to get elected by 42 Electoral Votes.
The Democrats lost three critical states by razor slim margins, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, which account for 46 Electoral votes. Winning all three would have allowed her to win the election. Based on reports of final election numbers, which may not be entirely accurate, she lost each state by the following number of votes.
Wisconsin: 27,257 out of over 2.8 million votes.
Michigan: 11,837 out of over 2.7 million votes.
Pennsylvania: 68,236 out of around 6 million votes.
According to the Wall Street Journal, urban voters did not vote at nearly the levels they did in the last two elections. In Detroit, for example, the voter turnout in inner city Detroit was 90,000 lower than in 2012. She lost the state by less than 12,000 votes. Similar statistics play out for Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. A decent voter turnout in these urban areas and Clinton claims all three states and wins.
The Democrats have four years to figure this out.
