I received this letter today from a concerned citizen in Baltimore County. The issue being addressed is the possible voiding of votes of our brave men and women in uniform who are deployed overseas in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other places around the world.
Here is the letter:
Dear Representatives and Senator,
Can any one explain to me why Governor O’Malley is requesting a waiver to the MOVE act, the federal Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment act. This would in effect impede the ability of the brave men and women of this state, who are serving our country overseas from participating in the upcoming election.
Under the act, states are required to supply absentee ballots 45 days prior to an election. However, states that demonstrate a hardship can request a waiver from the DOJ. This would tell me that anyone supporting the governor in this action is saying that the hardship to the state is greater then that experienced by our troops serving in harm’s way…..
While with the waiver our troops may still get their ballots, there is a greater probability that they will arrive to late to count. How ironic that those protecting our rights may be denied theirs’.
I am attaching a link to this article, and would appreciate a response.
Furthermore, I am encouraging all of my friends and colleges to follow up with their representatives as well….
Thank you.
This is an important issue that every candidate should be talking about at every opportunity – the voiding of the votes of our brave men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan by the O’Malley Administration.
