With 45 of the 50 states completed, we now have some outright majorities to report and they are unlikely to give the Republicans much comfort.
President: Not only does Senator Obama retain his lead, he has now reached a majority for election. The numbers from the first 45 states give him 272 Electoral Votes to 224 for Senator McCain.
This is a net Democratic Gain of 41 over the 2004 vote.
Senate: The Democrats are currently up four seats which would give them 53 seats plus ‘independent’ Bernie Sanders of Vermont for a total of 54 seats to the Republicans 45. Senator Lieberman’s status is unclear. At this point he votes with the Democrats, but there is talk they may kick him out of the party in 2009. If so, he would probably side with the GOP. So Democrats can count on 54 or 55 seats so far.
House: With this update, the Democrats reach the point of taking another majority in the House. So far they lead the GOP 227-176, which is a net gain of six seats from the current 233-202 majority and would give them 239-196 edge in 2009.
Governor: No changes other than Missouri gained for the Democrats which would give them a net edge of 29-21
