GOP politicians who endorsed Donald Trump are like canaries in coal mines. That comparison comes from Roll Call columnist Patricia Murphy in her commentary The Canaries in the Collapsing Trump Coal Mine.
In her column, Murphy compares the fate of down-ballot GOP candidates who have endorsed Donald Trump to the fate of canaries in coal mines that are filled with deadly gases.
Trump’s effect on down-ballot GOP candidates is referred to in a recent letter sent to RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. Signed by more than 150 Republicans, including two sitting Congressmen, the letter says, “Given the catastrophic impact that Donald Trump’s losing presidential campaign will have on down-ballot Senate and House races, we urge you to immediately suspend all discretionary RNC support for Trump and focus the entirety of the RNC’s available resources on preserving the GOP’s congressional majorities.”
Priebus is unlikely to grant the signatories’ request. Real Clear Politics national political reporter Caitlin Huey-Burns writes, “Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus likes what he is seeing from Donald Trump one week after the nominee’s campaign shakeup — so much so that he predicted the GOP standard-bearer would be tied or ahead of Hillary Clinton after Labor Day.”
Only time will tell if Priebus is correct or if he will be officiating the funerals of GOP canaries.
Oh well, at least one famous canary won’t be succumbing to Trump’s influence.
