As was revealed yesterday by the latest poll of Latin countries on the U.S. election, in all of 18 countries surveyed, Barack Obama is the overwhelming favorite.
The results also showed that of all of the Latin America countries that were surveyed, the Dominican Republic is the most informed on the U.S. presidential race.
So today we bring you this op-ed from the Dominican Republic which reflects the sentiments of many around the world on the excitement Obama has generated – and the fear many have of what might happen if he loses.
For El Caribe, Dominican attorney Pedro Dominguez Brito writes in part:
“I write these words as a human being, as an inhabitant of the Earth, as a son of God, as a lover of universal values that must prevail among those who inhabit the five continents: Barack Obama must be the next President of the United States. From afar, we must pray or transmit whatever energy we can to make this happen. … In the event that he doesn’t win, many will be sad and perhaps shed tears, because humanity as a whole will have lost. Barack Obama is a light which inspires hope that we can have a better world.”

Dominican Republic – El Caribe – Original Article (Spanish)
I’m not writing this article as a Dominican or a Latino, which I am by chance, although I feel proud of my roots. Naturally, I don’t write this as a United Statesien [someone of the United States], which I am not.
I write these words as a human being, as an inhabitant of the Earth, as a son of God, as a lover of universal values that must prevail among those who inhabit the five continents.
I may be biased, I don’t deny it. But I say from my heart with rock-solid conviction, thinking of the future of the world beyond the end of my nose and my circle of friends: Barack Obama must be the next President of the United States.
