‘Star Spanglish Banner’ – Worse than the ‘Magic Negro’

Everybody is jumping over Chip Saltsman for including the song “Barack the Magic Negro” in his Christmas “present” to fellow RNC members. But few have notice another doozy in the Paul Shanklin-vintage collection: a parody of Mexican immigrants called “Star Spanglish Banner.”

Here’s a fine YouTube presentation of this work of “parody.”

Now, getting to Tony Campbell’s point about the political imbecility of pushing the Magic Negro song after such an electoral shellacking, doesn’t it seem more damaging that a front-runner for RNC Chair would be mocking the aspirations of Latinos to achieve the American dream? African Americans may be lost to the GOP. But it’s the Latino population that is growing by leaps and bounds – and in the critical Southwest. Did the GOP learn nothing by baiting Latinos the last few years? Is the GOP not content to lose Florida, Colorado and New Mexico? Must Arizona fall to the Democrats for the GOP to realize that anti-Latino bigotry is an electoral loser? What about Texas? If Latinos in Texas voted Democratic at rates they do in Illinois, New York and California, Texas would be on the verge of blue-state status. Is this parody song designed to test the willingness of economically and socially conservative Latinos in Texas to stay in a party that mocks their very pretensions of American-ness?

You're right about "Star Spanglish Banner" and what it says about the Limbaugh/Shanklin audience in the GOP. But the entire CD, based on the list of titles, is more attack and sneering than true parody. Parody is what Weird Al does to songs, not what Shanklin produces. Can we at least get that right?

The parody was probably done when there were all of the La Raza pro-open borders, pro-amnesty, pro-Latino rallies a couple of years ago.

Does anyone really believe that the more conservative party can ever appeal to Hispanics. Pandering to Hispanics means that the Republicans will have to become the Democratic-lite, big government, big brother party to compete with the Democratic Party.

The pro business Repubicans need to realize that whatever they may think they are saving with lower wages due to open borders will eventually be lost to higher taxes and higher businesses expenses due to all of those illegal aliens eventaully becoming automatic Democratic voters.

    SD,
I thought the master plan was that those illegal immigrants get amnesty, get wealthier, and then vote Republican.

I remember when democrats were famous for their circular firing squads, but that pales in comparison to the self-destruction being practiced by republicans these days. How quickly things change...
  • TMV continues to inspire. I can't hear the vid, but the one section of the song I saw doesn't sound racist but rather is a commentary on the loose borders that crooked businesses, crooked governments, and crooked politicians prefer.

Perhaps "elrod" might consider trying to think about this in a bit more depth, or perhaps TMV should find someone else capable of that. They could start by looking at the images on the video and trying to understand the dangerous situation of having millions of people in the U.S. who have no or little allegiance to this country. Understanding that sentence is probably going to be a real brain workout for "elrod", so ask friends to help. Then, "elrod" can try to find out which government some of the organizers of the major marches were linked to, and the possibility that implies.

    elrod,

That has the Karl Rove wet dream. Of course, Karl Rove has been shown to be an idiot and is one of the reasons that the Republican Party is now irrelevant. California is lost to the Repubican forever due to Hispanic population growth. California is running massive budget deficits and will have very high taxes for the middle class because of illegal aliens. I hope the cheap dry wall and lawn service was worthy it for the oen border Republicans.

I don't normally frequent this site and just stumbled upon this article today. However, this thing is almost as incomprehensible as it is insulting. 24AheadDotCom, the song was released on a CD sans images, but the pictures don't help, and often don't even make sense, such as the picture at :14. The "Welcome to the United States" sign inexplicably has what appears to be the star of David on the American flag! Bullet holes? Fair enough given the rise in border violence (Juarez is a war zone), and the crossing sign, while also unfair, is not always entirely inaccurate. But the "welfare office" sign is another stereotype based on an urban myth, since illegal immigrants cannot receive welfare (and even legal immigrants are limited).

The actual lyrics, sung by a chorus in sub-Speedy Gonzales thick accents, opens with "Jose can you see." An old joke, and a mildly amusing one at that, so fair enough. It then goes on about how Jose and kin sail across the Rio while the "gringos are sleeping," and they hate our flag, preferring Mexico's own red, white, and green. That seems to be what the rest of the song is about, letting the US flag become frayed while shouting about how "our flag was not theirs," then ending in an accent so thick I can't even make out the lyrics. Something about weenies.

Definitely relations with Mexico, the borders, immigration, etc. are legitimate concerns that won't go away. But this song doesn't actually delve into any of the serious concerns, and its purpose in general is hard to fathom, outside of "Ha ha, Latinos speak funny! How dare they display the Mexican flag in rallies!" There may be some specific context I'm missing, but taken by itself, and to someone who actually *lives* in a border city, it's baffling.

    Elrod,

Don't you think that they're counting on the Latinos to have forgiven and forgotten by the next election if they push hard enough on social conservatism issues that they agree with the Republicans about?
