June 24, 2013, 3:26 p.m.Author Richard Matheson, who was 87, has died at home. His family announced his passing in a protected Facebook post; the news was shared by publisher Tor/Forge.
Matheson’s imaginative stories were enticing to Hollywood. His book “I Am Legend” was made into a film, not just once but three separate times. 2007’s “I Am Legend,” starring Will Smith, was preceded by “The Omega Man” with Charlton Heston in 1971 and “The Last Man on Earth” in 1964 with Vincent Price.
Matheson also wrote directly for the screen, penning 16 episodes of “The Twilight Zone” and one of “Star Trek.” He wrote the screenplay of “Duel,” directed in 1971 by Steven Spielberg…

Tor.com is saddened and staggered to learn of the passing of Richard Matheson, the esteemed author of I am Legend, The Shrinking Man, What Dreams May Come, Hell House, the script for the Steven Spielberg film Duel, and many Twilight Zone scripts, among many more works….
Wikipedia: It is a film adaptation of the 1975 novel Bid Time Return
by Richard Matheson, who also wrote the screenplay
I don’t have a lot to say about the death of Richard Matheson, except that he was quite an important influence in my early, formative writing, and that’s as much from a craft perspective as from an admiration of various stories that have become iconic: The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Terror at 40,000 Feet — wherein America first got to see William Shatner freak out on national TV– I Am Legend, Somewhere In Time, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, Combat, The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. ; the classic short story “Born of Man and Woman,” his adaptation script for the mini-series Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles starring doomed Rock Hudson: he never stopped working.
The range and steady output is astonishing.
And if not art, then craft.
Requiescat in Pace if Pace there be.
Please look at the Wikipedia page.
Or, at least, just glance through his credits at the bottom.
We have lost a giant.

There’s a metaphor in there somewhere.
