Sen. Harry Reid’s Chief of Staff David Krone Blasts Republicans as “Cowards” and “Henchmen” Over Romney Taxes

Aug 6, 2012 by

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) chief of staff David Krone is doubling down on the Republicans over Reid’s comment that GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney didn’t pay taxes for 10 years, blasting them as “cowards” and “henchmen” for their attacks on his boss.

“They’re a bunch of cowards, and they’re avoiding the issue,” said David Krone, Reid’s chief of staff, in an interview with POLITICO on Sunday night. “Lindsey Graham, Reince Priebus — they’re a bunch of henchmen for Romney, and they’re all reading off the same talking points. They couldn’t hold a candle to Harry Reid.”

Krone added: “What Harry Reid said is the fact of what he was told. To turn it around, all their childish rants this weekend about calling Reid a ‘liar’ and all that, it just shows you how scared they are that Harry Reid was telling the truth.” Source: Politico

I don’t know what the truth Mitt Romney tax situation for the last 10 years, but I am bothered by the fact that he is also doubling down and not releasing any more returns. That points towards something so bad being in his tax returns that he would rather bear the heat rather than do the right thing. This lends some credence to Harry Reid’s claims that something is amiss. This issue is going to follow Mitt Romney into the presidential debates where he will have to answer questions and risk looking like he’s talking out of both sides of his mouth. Well, we already know that to be the case.

Reid is playing some pretty classic dirty pool on this one and Romney is screwed. Reid really doesn’t have to prove anything, and no one cares if he did. I mean, even if Reid gave Romney a name, all they will then do is call that person a liar and they will be right back in the position of having to show their returns.

Now its quite likely that Reid received no actual intel and is making it all up. Romney still have to show his returns or it stays in the news. All the while trying to make people believe that Reid is lying when it is quite obvious that Romney himself is hiding something. The shear bastardry of the move is impressive. The only possible way out of this for Romney is for him to release taxes that don’t show anything damning like he paid 5% in taxes for a few years. Which I’m 95% sure is exactly what they do show and why he doesn’t want them being scrutinized.

Release the __________ returns. Whatever it is, this drip drip is worse. Fess up: I didn’t pay any taxes ever and furthermore I never will.

It seems strange that he would turn over 23 years of tax returns for McCain’s team to peruse, but will turn over only 2010 (partially) and 2011 (after the nomination? or the election?). Either something in the returns for 2008 and/or 2009 is the problem, or Mr. Romney’s penchant for secrecy is the problem.

That penchant (almost obsessiveness) for secrecy is one that is problematic for anyone being handed the enormous power of the office of President of the United States. Do we really want another Cheney in that position of power? And do we want another President that will do anything possible to protect wealthy citizens from paying at least as great a percentage of their wealth in taxes as the rest of us have to do?
