#RomneyShambles: Carl Lewis Slams Romney Saying “Some Americans Shouldn’t Leave the Country”

Jul 27, 2012 by

#AmericanBorat: Mitt Romney’s overseas trip is still a mangled mess that aims to define him in the worst possible way, setting him up to be a goldmine for comedians everywhere. Former sprint and gold medalist Carl Lewis entered the fray saying, “I swear, sometimes I think some Americans shouldn’t leave the country. Are you kidding me, stay home if you don’t know what to say,” The Independent reports. Ouch. His comments are in response to Mitt Romney questioning the preparedness of London to host the Olympics. George W. Bush was called a lot of names, but I can’t recall the Brits labeling him as a “wazzock.”

Lewis, who won 10 Olympic medals including 9 gold during his career, criticised the presidential candidate for suggesting London may not be ready for the Olympics. Mr Romney faced widespread criticism and mockery yesterday for his comments – and for seemingly forgetting the Laborr leader Ed Miliband’s name during a press conference.

Much of the criticism came from the social networking site Twitter – with many users tagging comments about Romney with the hashtag #romneyshambles. Source:  The Independent

The Indpendent reports First Lady Michelle Obama urged America’s athletes to ”have fun, breathe a bit, but also win,” as she met them at their training base in east London. Mrs. Obama will have a ringside seat at tonight’s opening ceremony. Maybe she can stem the bleeding by pushing Mitt Romney off center-stage where the British media is concerned. Mitt Romney should retroactively cancel his London trip and self-deport from Great Britain. The color will drain out of many faces as we brace for the worst when he goes to Poland and Israel.

Even Michelle Malkin who would defend Romney even if he outsourced every American job and who would support even a Texas armadillo running for president against Obama, has been eerily quiet about Romney’s inaugural foreign foray…

Dorian — Yes, I visit her site fairly often and I was surprised to see she was quiet as a mouse on the topic. Charles Krauthammer, one of the leading conservatives, expressed shock at Mitt Romney’s horrible performance. It’s just embarrassing on all levels.

    Saw that, Janet (Krauthammer) Amazing!

But what is even more amazing is that there are those politicians and pundits who will support Romney to the bitter end — and it will be bitter.

Let’s hope Romney insults the Poles big time. Poland one of the most right wing countries in Europe needs to be insulted by Romney. Perhaps this will teach the Poles not to blindly follow the Americans into so many misadventures of torture and war.

WeslyV — Considering Mitt Romney’s track record, you may get your wish. LOL.

Dorian — Bobby Jindal and McDonnell shrugged it off like it was nothing. Um, even former president George W. Bush wasn’t a train wreck overseas. You may not have agreed with him, but he understood not to insult his allies.

Mitt is revving for a fight with Russia (Soviet Union according to surrogate) and China, which shows he just doesn’t get it. John McCain may have spotted the train wreck quality in Mitt Romney, but was a sucker for pain by picking Sarah Palin, the other extreme.

President Barack Obama signed a bill in the Oval Office expanding military and civilian cooperation with Israel, including the release of an additional $70 million in military aid for Israel.

The aid will help Israel expand production of a short-range rocket defense system. The system, known as Iron Dome, has proved successful at stopping rocket attacks fired at Israeli civilians from close range, including from Gaza.

How mean-spirited of Obama to do this on the eve of Romney’s visit to Israel where Romney is certain to bash Obama’s policies towards Israel — even though (presidential) politics are supposed to stop at the water’s edge.

“But what is even more amazing is that there are those politicians and pundits who will support Romney to the bitter end — and it will be bitter.”

Just like the Republicans supported Palin to the bitter end and supported McCain’s decision until McCain lost the election. They many (but not all) Republicans came to their senses. It seemed as though they were engaged in the “us versus them” mindset of the Bush administration. They wanted so badly to believe their team was perfect that they let their desires cloud their common sense.

And the Republicans are letting their desires towards Romney cloud their common sense this election.

StockBoyLA says: And the Republicans are letting their desires towards Romney cloud their common sense this election.

To quote John Stuart Mill (again):

… I did not mean to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid. I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative. I believe that is so obviously and universally admitted a principle that I hardly think any gentleman will deny it. (Public and Parliamentary Speeches, 31 May 1866, pp. 85-86.)

Steve, I wish that we had the ability to “Like” comments, like we did a couple years ago. :)

    @WesleyV: please no!

Like it or not, any oversees politician is “representing” you.
Do you want him to do a bad job?

This winner takes all approach to political dialoge is prisoners delimma.

Thanks StockBoyLA, John Stuart Mill was both timely and timeless… a person from the past worth getting to know more about… for today.

The comments by Kraut WERE a startling turnabout face since he had just written an editorial piece in yesterday’s WaPo praising Romney’s diplomatic venture, and claiming that under Romney we would no longer be criticizing the WRONG countries, as we have for 4 years under Obama.

I guess even the Kraut doesn’t take being made a fool out of kindly

Will this trip carry the weight of — Dean’s Scream, Palin’s clothes closet, Dukakis’ tank,or George Bush’s flight suit?

The rest of the trip will be interesting to see how Romney reacts under pressure.

Will he be quick to learn or will be defend with hubris?

Actually the Americans who need to leave America are those who could use a good dose of cultural understanding.

Unfortunately Romney has travelled outside the US in his youth and he hasn’t learned anything. He has no excuse for his bumbling.
