Glenn Beck Selling Anti-Roberts “Coward” T-Shirt

Jun 29, 2012 by

Mediaite reports that former Fox News star talker and current conservative web and talk radio star Glenn Beck was furious over the Supreme Court decision on health care reform. He called George W. Bush (get ready for this now, Mr. Bush, this will be brutal)…a “progressive” and is now selling this John Roberts themed t-shirt on his website. It gives us this screen shot:

This kind of name calling reaction from partisans is why many independents choose to remain independents. Suddenly Roberts is a coward and a RINO — even though it’s highly unlikely his conservative critics will be saying that in the future.

But, hey, it sells: it hits hot buttons (this time against a justice who was considered a brilliant best bud until yesterday morning), can motivate voters to vote (get more conservative judges than the conservative judges who are either cowards or RINOS), and can make some big $$$$ along the way.

Beck will make enough in pre-orders alone of these t-shirts to keep him set in cases of tear-inducing eye drops for years.

And if he can come up with a special extra-extra-extra extra large, Rush Limbaugh will buy one, too.

  1. I’ve heard almost NOTHING but stupidity from the Right after yesterday’s ruling. There are sound, legitimate arguments against Obamacare but these nitwits are name-calling, threatening, speaking in hyperbole and slogan. One Congressman from Georgia was on NPR’s Marketplace talking about dumping beer on Roberts’ head. Geez!

The GOP needs to bring out the adults (if there are any left).

Although, the conspiracy theorist in me thinks the media is purposely parading out the idiots and not even asking the adults for comment …

Barky, you must be selectively reading then. I have found just the opposite, that a lot of right wing bloggers and pundits are seeing the bigger picture, although clearly there is the element that Glenn Beck represents too. Overall though I’ve been pleasantly surprised that some people whom i would have expected less of, have accepted the ruling on Constitutionality even though there’s still a desire to repeal a bad law, and many on the right are understanding that the ruling was actually a strategic victory for placing a check on Congressional powers.

On that point about selective reading, i think it’s unfortunate that bloggers tend to highlight the worst of each political side. For some it is tactical, an attempt to make the other side look bad, while other bloggers like Joe G. presumably are just calling out things that bother them..

No matter what the intent though, the result is that polarity is amplified as people who lean left tend to start shunning the right and stop noticing that there are normal and responsible rightwingers, and vice versa. This tactic was used very successfully, in fact, by Rush Limbaugh in the 90s when he constantly lampooned liberals by cherrypicking extremists and playong tapes of quotes by them on his show over and over, to the point that conservatives now think this is representative of the whole left, and now the left has engaged in turning the tables for the last 10 years or so. It’s quite destructive, and way past time that we stop elevating the extremists or the worst of each side and instead focus on the best.

They don’t seem to have much use for them anymore Barky.

    @CS
Please supply of a few sane Right bloggers and pundits. This former GOP spokesman is anything but sane.

Whichever way Robert’s went, there were going to be nasty T-shirts.

Rudi- Krauthammer and Will are the most obvious that come to mind. The little bit that I’ve seen of some of the more strident folks like Erik Erikkson and Michelle Malkin didn’t seem to be too over the top but i may have missed something. Ed Morrissey and Allahpundit , conservative leaning (she would say classically liberal) lawprof Ann Althouse, and right of center folks like James Joyner and his cohorts at Outside the Beltway were all calm and well reasoned in their responses.

Glen Beck never met a buck he didn’t like. He’s raking in about $25 per shirt. That’s a lot of moolah.

He will, after the firestorm dies down, be making even more money by telling everyone how clever Justice Roberts was for starting the assault on the Commerce Clause which is one basis for all the past and future legislation Congress sees fit to enable the “health and welfare” of this nation’s citizens. It will take a long time, and another conservative Justice wouldn’t hurt, but our grandchildren could see the end of every law promoting social good and civil rights initiated since the 1930′s.

    Roberts a conservative? You bet.

What, there are no crosshairs on that shirt? I think Beck is getting soft in his old age.

While I do think the left is picking the extremists on the right to point to, you can’t entire call it selective attn on the part of the left. The nuts on the right are the loudest, there are lots of them, and they are easy to find. Just go to the top rated conservative media outlets and there they are. I find on the right the nuts are on top, and you have to dig to find the reasonable ones. On the left, I see more reason, but if you want to dig a bit, not much mind you, you can find the liberal whackos.

Sign me up for the Pro-Robert’s T-shirt and the anti-Beck one too.

On the one hand outrageous behavior or comments deserve to be called out and criticized. More often though I get the sense that outrageous behavior is spotlighted as being somehow representative of the other side. That of course encourages further divisiveness. Opportunities for long term cooperation are sacrificed for short-term victories in endless games of one-upmanship.
