Mike Huckabee appears to be competing for the title of “Most Extreme GOP Candidate”. The Topeka Capital-Journal states, “Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee indicated Thursday that if elected, he wouldn’t rule out employing federal troops or the Federal Bureau of Investigation to stop abortion from taking place in the United States.”
During a campaign stop in Rockwell City, Iowa, Rolling Stone contributor Matt Taibbi asked Huckabee if he meant he would send the FBI or the National Guard to close down abortion clinics. Huckabee replied, “We’ll see when I’m president.”
In a May 8, 2015 opinion piece published by the Washington Post, syndicated columnist George F. Will writes, “Now comes the Apostle Mike, determined to save Christian America. Mike Huckabee’s second run for the Republican presidential nomination will reveal how much embarrassment can emanate from one small town.” That small town that Will refers to is Hope, Arkansas.
Will concludes by saying, “For many voters, a party is largely defined by the behavior of its presidential aspirants. For Republicans worried about broadening their party’s appeal, there is one word for Huckabee’s stances: Appalling.”
Plenty of moderate Republicans are pro-life, but they respect the authority of the U.S. Supreme Court, which is why they shake their heads whenever Huckabee speaks.
