Forget politics. DC has something to be REALLY excited about. A genuine ace – perhaps the best pitcher to wear the “W” cap since Walter Johnson. Stephen Strasburg was the most hyped new pitcher since Mark Prior on the 2002 Cubs. Strasburg dominated in the minors. So how did he do in his debut tonight?
Two minor negatives first:
1) The Pirates hitters – not exactly Major League Baseball’s finest – seemed to adjust to his two-seem fastball the second time through. They even tagged him for a two-run home run after taking a few of his off-speed deliveries opposite field (a sign of mature hitting). This was the 4th inning.
2) In his first at-bat as a hitter he failed to run out a grounder, and lost an almost certain hit. Forget pitchers’ inability to hit. You just run the damn thing out. It’s essential to the game, and to professionalism in general.
But these were minor things. Here’s the great stuff:
1) His stuff. It was as amazing as advertised. Four pitches to get anybody out at will.
2) Composure. After that rough 4th inning he absolutely dominated the Pirates. That says a LOT. Oh, and he clearly realized his lolly-gag gaffe.
3) Adjustments. The key difference between the high minors and the majors is the ability to make adjustments between at-bats. The Bucs adjusted to him in the 4th. He adjusted back the rest of the way.
4) Control. No walks – even though he fell behind quite a bit early in the game.
5) Power. 14 strikeouts – 2nd most for a debut performance (two guys got 15).
We’ve all heard the analysis of his physical prowess, his effortlessness, and his uncanny poise. But his ability to adjust showed how SMART he is. And that will be key as he faces far more talented hitters.
Congratulations Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals. With Bryce Harper drafted DC really does have a bright baseball future.
There really is more to DC than politics – or the woeful Redskins.
