The apparent attempted attack on Delta/Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day is not an occurrence that easily lends itself to humor. Nevertheless, this tongue-in-cheek article by Jassim al-Mutair of Iraq’s Sotal Iraq newspaper takes the opportunity to make fun of, from his point of view, excessive Muslim sensitivity over new U.S. security procedures that emerged after the event.
Verging on being off-color and feigning outrage over the new rules, Sotal Iraq’s Jassim al-Mutair writes in part:
Most airports around the world have decided to intensify security screenings by having passengers remove all of their clothing – including undergarments. This will be done through the use of scanners, which makes passengers appear as naked as Allah created them! … Dear Iraqi men and women: Join me in condemning al-Qaeda and the Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, who caused this huge problem for a majority of female members of the Iraq’s National Assembly. These female lawmakers, after obtaining diplomatic passports, have gotten used to spending official and unofficial breaks in Lebanon and elsewhere on the Mediterranean. … But I’m even sadder for female members of the al-Wasit Provincial Council (formerly the al-Kut Provincial Council) and for each of their chaperons, as it has become impossible for them to travel due to their adamant opposition to these degrading airports inspections, which violate privacy and with that, their chaperons and their testicles!
Then, skewering a particularly pious Iraqi Mullah, Jassim al-Mutair writes:
It’s no secret that grief is on the mind of Sheik Ayatollah Ahmed al-Sultayni, the vice-chair of the Basra Provincial Council who is about to travel to Japan. How can he allow airport inspectors to see his testicles … he, who still insists on preventing the sale of beer in Basra’s restaurants and bars? He, who asked his colleague, the democratic governor of Basra, to install cameras and scanners to inspect cars, restaurants and arriving aircraft in order to totally prevent the distribution of beer in the province?!
