Another mass shooting and we send our prayers to those who were injured that they will recover. That they will be able to move forward with their lives after such an unimaginable horror. We send our prayers to the families and friends of those who were killed that they will somehow someway be able to move forward from this senseless and unspeakable tragedy. We pray that as they go through the difficult stages of grieving they will be surrounded by caring and compassionate people who will just listen and allow them to grieve. We pray that they will find the courage to keep going even all they can do is take one breath at a time. We pray that someone will tell them that even if all they can do at any moment is to just take that one breath it is okay and enough. We pray that one day they, and all who have lost loved ones especially through acts of violence, will be able to come to terms with the unacceptable reality that they will never know why this happened to those they love. We send our prayers and shake our heads in disbelief that this has happened once again and we go on with our lives.
We in the United States take pride in the fact that we are a world leader. We take pride in our democracy, our Constitution and our Bill of Rights. We should because when our government was created it was as something new and despite a civil war, it has survived. But the United States is also among the world’s leaders in mass shootings. That is not something to be seen or worn as a badge of honor. That fact is something to be seen as a badge of dishonor and disgrace. Yet we cannot even have a discussion about reasonable and rational gun control laws. Perhaps stronger gun control laws would not have prevented any of the mass shooting which have been happening in our country at an alarming frequency. But we do not know that because we have yet to even try. Protecting our freedom ensures that more shootings will occur. Should we not be even more concerned with protecting lives?
