“. . . it is Independents who will decide next year’s election outcome, and as of today they are slightly leaning voting Republican up and down the ballot . . .” – Matthew Dowd
The above quote comes from Matthew Dowd’s ABC News column “Canary in Coal Mine: Trouble Ahead for Poll Leaders Trump and Clinton“.
Dowd also writes, “Hillary Clinton’s unfavorable rating today is a net negative 11 points, and among Independents it is a net negative 18 points. . . Hillary is viewed as not honest and trustworthy by an amazing 57% of the country and by 62% of Independents.”
Citing a new Quinnipiac University national poll, the Washington Post‘s Chris Cillizza states, “Just 31 percent of independents describe her [Clinton] as honest and trustworthy while 62 percent say she is not.”
Just how large is the percentage of Americans who identify themselves as Independents? According to survey results released by GALLUP in January of this year, 43% of Americans are Independents, with 30% being Democrats and 26% being Republicans (+/- 1% margin of error).
