Before anyone gets too self righteous, partisan or seriously philosophical about this, please understand that I am laughing with every word I write. Of course, it’s only funny because it’s true. The scene is Laurens County, South Carolina. Why does it always have to be South Carolina? The subject is the sex life of a potential political candidate. The pledge: A county Republican resolution requires potential political candidates to pledge that they have not had any extra-marital, or premarital, sex in the past and also that they will never read or view pornography.
One serious note does arise in this context. With gay marriage still banned in South Carolina, the resolution would preclude any active LGBT from running for county office as a Republican. But, that’s enough of being serious.
How does, for example, Newt Gingrich get on the ballot in Laurens County? Is it possible to use the internet without at least once having come across porn? Does the resolution effectively ban internet users from running for office as Republicans in Laurens County?
And, didn’t South Carolina recently have a two term Republican governor who went for a walk along the Appalachian Trail by way of South America? He easily carried Laurens County in both elections [being too lazy to do the research,I made that part up, but I believe it to be true].
Still, no matter what I say, I can’t say it any better than Alex Castellanos who recently quipped, in another context,
“Republicans being against sex is not good…Sex is popular.”
Oh, the image above is the Laurens County Courthouse [I did research that].
