As most of my readers will know I am a big fan of the Fox series Glee and I am over the moon with Chris Colfer winning the Golden Globe for best supporting actor. The sincerity of his shocked reaction to winning and his emotional acceptance speech were wonderful but even more touching was the fact that he dedicated the award to bullied kids.
For those who do not know the series, Colfer plays an openly gay teen and they have been doing a very good plotline about him being bullied because of his sexuality.
After expressing his thanks for the award and his emotions at the success he went on to say:
“Most importantly, to all the amazing kids that watch our show and the kids that our show celebrates, who are constantly told ‘no’ by the people in their environments, by bullies at school that they can’t be who they are or have what they want because of who they are. Well, screw that, kids”
Good for him !
We’ve seen the stories over the past months about children killing themselves over being bullied. Every day students head to school worried about far more than passing that algebra test. I myself was bullied but from what I have read things today are far worse than what they were in my time.
We need people to speak up and he took the time that he could have used for himself to speak out to those who are in need of support.
I’ve respected his talent for some time now but this proves what a classy guy he is.
I suspect this will be the first of many awards for Mr. Colfer.
