Absolutely. Thank you, Gerald R. Ford, for trying to impeach William O. Douglas when the man had not committed any crime. You proved yourself a true party hack who would do whatever he was told when you did that.
Thank you for taking a deal to pardon Nixon in return for being appointed vice president. Who could but agree that justice is less important than healing the wounds done to the Republican Party by having its leader indicted.
Thank you for helping to control inflation, running at around 7% at the time, by making buttons for people to wear. Had the press not been unkind to you, those buttons would surely have done the trick.
Thank you for responding to a recession by doing what every Republican president (sorry to sound so partisan) has offered to do regardless of the economic situation: tax cuts. Because if you have a recession, you cut taxes. If you have a depression, you cut taxes. If you have a booming economy, you cut taxes. Is this striking anyone as repetitive?
Sorry, but I’m not a Ford fan. He was a party hack who was appointed for one purpose: to pardon Nixon. He was no statesman who helped heal the country. Far from it, his pardon was highly divisive. Perhaps an honest trial would have healed things, but telling everyone “Game over, no justice today, no truth to be exposed, just go home and forget about the rule of law” didn’t do it. That pardon was pure party hackery, as expected from Ford. That’s why he was tagged for the job: the party knew he would serve them first and foremost.
