Saddam Hussein Thrown Out of Court

Saddam Hussein was thrown out of court earlier today. It seems that the former dictator could not control himself any longer and “began to shout during his trial on charges of genocide against Iraq’s Kurdish population.”

He suddenly shouted a verse from the Koran:

“Fight them and God will punish them!” he yelled.

I am not sure whether you are helping yourself there Saddam. You know, when people accuse you of murdering tens of thousands of innocent human beings, men, women and children, it might, umh, send the wrong message when you suddenly quote violent verses of your holy book.

The judge then told the guards to remove Saddam: a co-defendent stood up and started insulting the prosecutors. When a guard tried to push him back into his chair he “threw a punch”. Of course, he – Hussein Rashid Mohammed – was thrown out as well.

The court on Monday heard testimony about burying alive prisoners and sexually abusing female detainees.

Saddam and his fellow defendants are charged with acts of genocide against Iraqi Kurds during a crackdown in the late 1980s in which an estimated 180,000 people were killed. If convicted, the defendants could be sentenced to death by hanging.

Come on Michael, its a forgone conclusion we are going to hang this guy. What he says in court makes no difference to the outcome.

  2. Snarky: I am opposed to the death penalty, but if there is any person who deserves it, it’s Saddam.

  3. Pug says:

We should hang him, in public, and the sooner the better. Why is this trial taking so long?

  4. Kim Ritter says:

I agree – this seems like a never-ending media feeding circus. The longer this drags on, the less it seems like justice, and the more like political theatre for the rest of the world.

  5. Davebo says:

Why is this trial taking so long?

Because they are desperate to make the trial appear legitimate.

And by they, I really mean us. At least for the most part.

But in the big picture of things what does it really matter? Those predisposed to believe Saddam is a martyr are going to believe it regardless of how fair we try to make the trial appear.

  6. Kim Ritter says:

But who sees him as a martyr? The Baathists? If he was as big a monster has we have heard, how could anyone truly believe that? The trial should have been much shorter and the publicity kept to a minimum, while security for the participants was kept to a maximum. If Saddam chose not to come to court, it should have tried him in absentia. It should have taken a month not 2 years??? I don’t even remember when it started.
