Nuclear Bomb Circus: Pakistan, North Korea & USA

(A cartoon by Angel Boligan, El Universal, Mexico City, Mexico, caglecartoons.com)

While the world leaders watch helplessly, and make meaningless noises, at the brazen manner North Korea has exploded the nuclear device, it is also time to jog our memories.

For full five years the USA and the world leaders knew for sure about the major involvement of Pakistan in clandestinely exchanging nuclear and missile knowhow with rogue states. Why were they silent then? It is like encouraging child lovers to have sexual intercourse and then raising an alarm when the baby has been born!!!

Even the media was crying hoarse about the blatant manner Pakistan was nudging its star nuclear scientist, Abdul Qadeer Khan, to spread the nuclear virus among the rogue states.

The public memory is notoriously short. If the TMV readers are serious about recalling certain important past events leading to the present dangerous developments, then they should visit pakistan-facts web site.

Now we turn to The Telegraph story written in 2004: “The ‘supermarket’, run by Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of the Pakistani bomb, was ‘the most dangerous phenomenon in proliferation for many years,’ said Mohammed ElBaradei, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog.”

When the heat became unbearable for General Musharraf and he was confronted with unrefutable evidence, the President of Pakistan fudged the issue in his usual masterly fashion, blaming it all on the previous governments. Whereas it was known the world over that A Q Khan could not operate without the consent, support and guidance of the Pakistan army chief, ISI (the secret service) and the military top brass.

But look at the cheeky reply President Musharraf gave when putting A Q Khan under house arrest to put a lid firmly on the scandal that threatened to involve the high and mighty in Pakistan (and perhaps in the USA).

“President Pervez Musharraf has pledged that the disgraced founder of Pakistan’s nuclear-weapons program can keep the vast wealth he accumulated selling atom bomb-making technology to rogue states around the world.

“Gen. Musharraf, just days after provoking worldwide consternation by pardoning Abdul Qadeer Khan for supplying nuclear expertise to Libya, Iran and North Korea, said in an interview with the London Sunday Telegraph that the scientist’s property or assets also would be spared.”

For more on this go to The Washington Times.

To find out more about North Korea’s journey to become nuclear power (with China first helping Pakistan, and then Pakistan in turn helping North Korea in providing nuclear knowhow), please visit this website to read the article written two years ago.

Let me quote just two paragraphs:

“Pakistan has become a major diplomatic headache for the Bush Administration. On the one hand, Pakistan is a crucial ally in the war against terrorism. Many analysts suspect Osama Bin Laden is now hiding somewhere in Pakistan; cooperation from Pakistani security and intelligence officials is needed to capture Osama and cut the power of Al Qaeda.

“On the other hand, Pakistan’s ties to North Korea’s nuclear program have violated bilateral assurances to the U.S. Pakistan’s actions also have facilitated a signatory to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (North Korea is a signatory) to violate its commitments.”

So what is the point in beating one’s breast when the world for years was watching with open eyes the looming threat instead of nipping the evil in the bud.

Here are the two comments on the above mentioned website (also written two years ago):

“When, not if, the Islamic bomb is used agianst USA/UK, it will have its origins in Pakistan. I will be the first to say serves you jolly well right for ignoring Pakistan’s terrorism against India and its links with Taliban and al Qaida, which are well known but given the blind eye by the USA/UK that continue to indulge this rogue state.”S.Choudhry, Germany

“The lax American attitude towards Pakistan’s nuclear proliferation activities is nothing short of criminal. It blows my mind that Pakistan sells nuke technology to the North Koreans, who will deploy it against US military personnel in East Asia or maybe in ballistic missiles aimed at the American west coast – and we do nothing. As a matter of fact we send them oodles of taxpayer money. Well, this taxpayer is truly disgusted.”J.Jones, USA

Is President Bush secretly happy…see the cartoon below…

Have you seen this movie before? The president of the United States identifies a new enemy and threatens them. They develope nuclear capabilities to protect themselves from the only country to have used them. The president proposes sanctions that won’t work. NEXT?

  2. Joseph says:

Amazingly, no two countries can agree on any aspect of this episode. Some are skeptical; some believe a nuclear test occurred. Others want the “international community” to act; others, the US, UN, the PRC, or Japan. One gets the idea, Pyongyang has 100+ opponents, and not two to deal with at the same time.

This is like Italy and Abyssinia and Japan and Manchuria all over again.

  3. Pyst says:

And once again Rummy has a hand in some fo this…directly. It seems 6 years ago Rummy was working for a compnay that sold a nuke reactor to the RNK.

What is it with Rummy working for companies, or at times with the US gov. that sells WMD’s to obviously bad governments/ leaders of countries???

Here’s hoping for some vigorous pushback if Bush tries to use NK to prop up his national security image: LINK

    Look for Oct 9 entry.

Your article has some gross inaccuracies based upon urban myths and generic Islamphobia of the garden variety. Pakistan and Pakistanis have supported the USA since it was founded in 1947. She also was the base where the U2s used to fly out from.

The article has errors in it. Pakistan is not a new friend of the USA. Pakistan was a founding member of SEATO and CENTO (Asian NATOs), and a cold war ally that fought on the side of the US against the USSR. Pakistan also supported the USA in Korea and Vietnam. However Pakistan is the most mistreated “friend in the world. It is un-American to treat friends they way the US has treated Pakistan. The USA and the West walked away from the Afghan mess and left more than 30,000 mercenary fighters that it had imported from the Arab world for Pakistan to deal with. On top of that sanctions were imposed on Pakistan right after the Afghan war, and Pakistanis felt like used “Kleenex. The world owes Pakistan a big debt for the destruction of the USSR.

The Wazirisitan deal was approved by Presidnet Bush as not being anti-American.

In the past few years more than 600 Pakistani soldiers have lost their lives fighting the Taliaban and the Al-Qaeda. Several hundered Al-Qaeda have been sent to the USA for trial including KSM (Khalid Sheikh Muhammad), who President Bush mentioned as the mastermind of the 911.

The Taliban was a construct of the CIA and was armed by the CIA, ISI and the Saudis as a counter to a resurgent Russian-backed communist party and an antidote to the civil war in Afghanistan. Pakistan supported the Taliban in conjunction with the CIA who were arming it right up till 2000. The Taliban were visiting Governor Bush’s ranch in Texas.

I need to point out the fact that Pakistani pleas for sanity in Afghanistan were ignored in 2001. Those who want to understand the irked Pakistani must know that the in 2001 the US installed a non-Pashtun, anti-Pakistan government in Kabul. The must also know that NATO allows the puppet Karzai government to continue to bark at Pakistan. The Pakistanis also know that despite being clod war allies for 50 years, Pakistan was threatened with annihilation in 2001. They also remember that $450 million paid for F-16s was never returned. Neither were the planes ever delivered. The delivery of Soya beans does not make up for paid-for but undelivered F-16s. Pakistanis also remember that the world and Afghanistan abandoned 2 million refugees in Pakistan. The Pakistanis also note that the world does not support the liberation of Kashmir

To put salt on open wounds, the US signed a Nuclear deal with arch-rival-India, not the major Non-NATO ally (Pakistan). Many Pakistanis wonder why $30 Billion were offered to Turkey to support war in Iraq, while Pakistan only received 1 billion to Pakistan for fighting Al-Qaeda and the Talibaan. You need to look at the situation with sanity and calm. Selective amnesia is the favorite tactic those who have an agenda. President Ayub Khan in 1966 said is best in his best selling book Pakistanis need “Friends no Masters. Pakistanis desire want and cherish American friendship however Pakistanis are not the “little brown brothers who can do the bidding of anyone. Pakistan is a 150 million strong nuclear state and a crucial pivot on the war on terror. President Musharraf said it quite bluntly, “no one can do more and the West will go down on their knees and fail if Pakistan without the help of the ISI and the Pakistan army. Those who deal with Pakistan need to learn some manners and some appreciation of the sacrifice of 600 Pakistani soldiers who died fighting the war on terror. Pakistanis are sick and tired of lectures on “do more.Pakistan and Pakistanis cannot do more. If anyone can find others who can do more, please use them!

Actually the USA should do more in helping Pakistan and Pakistanis building a modern and moderate Muslim nation that is friendly to the world.

    Best Regards,

Pakistan was the only country in the world that supported the USA, SEATO and CENTO and then was left to fend itself when faced with aggression by India in 1971. The country was dismembered into two pieces. Pakistanis pledged NEVER AGAIN. She created her version of the “Manhattan projectâ€?, and worked hard–begged borrowed and stole nuclear technology to acquire nuclear weapons and missiles to defend herself from a hostile neighbor. This is not a crime. It is self preservation. Since the nuclear blasts, Pakistan has not threatened anyone. Pakistan simply wants to survive. AQ Khan is Pakistan’s Einstein and Openhemier, a hero in Pakistan The AQ Khan bogey, is simply a ruse to perpetuate urban myths and indulge in Pakistani bashing.

  7. Nav says:

    Dears,

i wish to comment on the Mr. Patriots atatements issued. He fails to understand that even if a thief steals under hunger, he is a thief. Even if a murederer kills under influence of rage, intoxixation or even urged upon, he is a murderer. The pakistan is a country which was born for muslims who wanted themselves in the supreme postions in the undivided India but could not because they did nothing for independance (Read Mr Jinnah)but had a seet relation with rulers(British). On the other hand the satygrahi’s went on fighting, jailed and beaten got the fruits. The leader then wanted an independant state where he can be the ruler and went to creat Pakistan asking for a separate state for muslims.

Coming on the point, I wish to tell that in the war against terror, Pakistan is not an ally but a pain in back. He is called an ally beacuse it gives a platform to the Uncle Sam to have a base in Asia where major powers are in the neighbourhood, the China and the India. Pakistan is the one wgo recently supported Taliban, dont we know what was taliban. Even if did not attacked America, it was the one to shelter the attackers, fed them and conspired with them. It was the one who in the nexus with ISI planned and executed the hi jack od Indian Airliner IC 814. The America atacked Afganistan and flushed the Taliban who went to Pakistan, regrouped and now again coming back to Afghan. The taliban is a curse to humanity, the women and to the world. With practising the mediviel Islam, it poisons the very society the America dreams for Afganistan. And who supports it? The dear Pakistan!

The proxy war going in the Indian Subcontinent waged by the Pakistan in the name of helping poor Kashmiries is nothing but a conspiracy to engage Indian money and military into mountains, in the name of Jehad it does a lot of attrocities on the citizens of Kashmir and then puts the blame on the Indian forces. If the kashmiries are freedom fighters then sure Palistineans are also. the Cheheyans are same and then all persons will be the freedom fighters! Even Kurds of the Iraq!

Dr AQ Khan is a Hero in Pakistan because he got the techs in alms from China, bulid the Islamic bomb and then selling to the countries who may use it against the world peace and ofcourse, with pleasure, against uncle Sam. If Indian gets civilian nuclear deal with the Uncle Sam, she knows how to use it to get the energy for its poor but if the same would have been to the Pakistan, she would have made the bombs and sold them to N Korea, Iran and Palistine and may be Al Quada through proper channel!! and created again a pain for the world leaders! And pardoned by a President for doing so.

Many more articles may be said for this subject as it will be tried to post more realities to the world, unlike a mirage and fog of falsiness Mr Patriot is living in.

    Regards
