Only the Good Leave Young

The scenario is by now familiar: A gung-ho public servant with impeccable credentials joins the Bush administration’s War on Terror. He is ignored and marginalized because fresh thinking is verboten. He finally quits in frustration.

Um, exactly what article were you basing your typical anti-Bush rant on?

The article I read showed an experienced public official put in charge of our Afghanistan strategy, which worked very well. And that official is now stepping down because of “‘unexpected, unplanned and compelling family reasons,’ including family health issues and financial obligations for higher education for his children”.

Where does it show that the administration ignored and marginalized him? Looks to me like a typical public servant who could no longer afford to keep working for government pay levels when the kids hit college.

I second Pat’s question – the fact that the State Department is losing someone high-caliber is unfortunate, but there doesn’t seem to be any connection to policy here.

    OK, question answered:

CIA officer Henry “Hank” Crumpton, the head of the agency’s Afghanistan campaign at the time, had told Bush in late November 2001 that Pakistani and Afghan fighters were “definitely not” equipped to handle the mission and that “we’re going to lose our prey if we’re not careful.” According to Suskind, Crumpton “strongly recommended the marines, or other troops in the region, get to Tora Bora immediately.” But despite delivering this recommendation to Bush directly, the administration never committed more troops to the area, and bin Laden ultimately escaped.

As for the Afghanistan policy working “very well,” there is no way to so characterize it. The Taliban is back, the opium is back, Karzai is more like the mayor of Kabul than the leader of Afghanistan, the NE is totally controlled by the Taliban as a country within a country that Pakistan won’t venture into, nor are we able to.

Those of you still apologizing for this pathetic showing by our nation still don’t get it. Our country has tried now and failed to subdue three small, backward countries, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq.

I wonder if the Democrats are keeping list of the talent that was spurned by Bushco, and try to hire them back in 09?

  5. Kim Ritter says:

Good thinking, Paul in Austin–I hope that they are. Its a good thing Cheney isn’t running, because whoever wins will have to have almost no ties to Bush.

Why would anyone want to stick around in a lameduck administration that is going to do nothing in the next two years except for fueding with Congress? If people want to have a future they would get out now instead of waiting two more years.
