As so many pro-Israel bloggers, I am completely fed up with the UN’s (negative) bias towards Israel. When one looks at the UN, it almost seems as if Israel is the enemy of Human Rights and of the free world.
The UN is, more and more, becoming a charade.
That is why I endorse this petition. Excerpt:
We, the undersigned, are concerned that the UN has been subverted for decades into an instrument to persecute a member state, Israel. This violates charter guarantees of equality for all states and detracts from the ability of the UN to function as a fair and impartial mediator in the Middle East. Precious Secretariat resources for human rights are diverted into one conflict and one problem out of many. We insist that Israel be given equal treatment with all countries at the UN.
The UN Human Rights Commission, even after reform, issues endless condemnations of Israel, supported by notorious human rights violators such as Libya, Cuba, Iran, and Syria.
Israel is the only state that for decades was not part of a regional group and could not participate in UN bodies and consultations, and its membership is still restricted.
[...]
The Division for Palestinian Rights (DPR) and the committees it controls conduct an unrelenting campaign against Israel. The DPR fosters Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) that promote racism and attempts to impede peace efforts. These activities and related anti-Israel initiatives have damaged the credibility of the UN as a force for peace and a neutral mediator. We call on the UN to abolish the Division for Palestinian Rights and the associated Special Committee to Investigate Israeli Human Rights Practices Affecting the Palestinian People and Other Arabs of the Occupied Territories (SCIIHRP) and the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP).
Please consider signing the petition. Whether or not we will be able to change peoples’ minds is, for now, secondary: let us raise our voices condemning the anti-Israel bias of the UN first.
Thanks Michael!
No need to thank me. Just sign it
According to the Oxford Concise Dictionary a PETITION is a formal written APPEAL or REQUEST.
The tone and tenor of this so-called PETITION seems more like an ULTIMATUM, and therein lies the problem.
A petition in order to draw sympathy and support should be written with due humility, gentleness and reasonableness. It should be differentiated from a war-cry.
If I understand correctly a petition is meant to persuade people in a gentle manner to support the writers’ cause, not to threaten or frighten them by its shrill language.
Israel may have a genuine cause, but its leadership has been found wanting in developing a correct approach in winning the sympathies of the members of the comity of nations.
Whatever be the provocations, violent actions, aggressive behaviour and words seldom help in making friends. For that matter, even friends slowly but surely turn their backs, if not turn into foes.
I’m a little mixed in my opinion of Israel, as I believe there are no good guys, just some really bad guys on both sides and a lot of regular people on both sides who just want to get on with their lives.
That being said I think that as far as the UN is concerned, the problem with the Human Rights Comission only starts with their concentration on Israel’s human rights issues (which it certainly has). Give me a petition that demands that member states of the Human Rights Comission must be at least in the top 10 or 20 countries in terms of human rights records. It seems beyond obvious that if you have a terrible human rights record you have no bussiness in human rights oversight.
I agree with Swaaraj, your true alliance shows. Why not post a good story about the UN, Israel and Lebanon.
Last Israeli soldier withdraws from Lebanon
I seem to recall you critical of the UN and wanting IDF to annihalte(sp) Hezbelloh. Instead of this we get a ‘MEMRI’ petition. I didn’t read it, are Arabs referred to as barbarians?
I’m reasonably sure there a plenty of Countries that have just as strong a case against the UN.
If we single Israel out for special treatment we are adding to the problem, and not taking steps to reform the UN and the corruption that exists on the Security Council.
It’s true: the UN is so biased against Israel. I used to be pro-UN being in the USA but I changed.
I’m signing this ASAP
Maybe the petition would have more merit if it wasn’t from a Zionist group. This link:
Zionism-Israel is the group fronting the petition. This group and MEMRI LOOL…..
Lynx, most of the good guys are in Israel. Anyone who is well-informed on the Middle East knows this. I am proud to be a Zionist.
Here is an interesting series of YouTube videos describing the left, the United Nations, and Islamic terrorism. It was produced by a British liberal.
“No Excuses for Terror”
I’ll pass this petition around LGF.
IS LGF the US version of Weinig Groen Voetbal?
Tommy: Thanks. It has to be signed by as many people as possible.
Rudi: what is wrong with Zionists? Do you even know what the term means?
I just went to the bias of the source. Like SC said, the petion is an ultimatem(sp). You attack CAIR and this site is OK? Zionist are OK as long as they don’t cross the line like many of the Orthodox Zionist settlers who nearly revolted against their own Moderate government.
Rudi: Zionists are those who believe that Israel has a right to exist as a free and independent nation.
That makes.. lets see, just about everybody in the West a zionist, no?
No, the religious Zionists believe they have a Right fro God to the old Homeland, as opposed to the Left/secular Zionists. Any fundie group bothers me, Christian, Jew or Islamic. Like politics, there are many extremes, being a Lefty I accept the Labor Z but reject the Revisionist Z. Are you familar with Leon Hadar of the CATO Institute.
GP
Easy to read and not as radical as Chomsky. The comments are just as interesting. Sorry, GP is not as “flamethrowing” as Weinig Groen Voetbal.
