The hateful comment was left today by “Jimmy” on a Joe.My.God post about the DADT cloture vote. Joe gave his geek readers the commenter’s IP address and told them to get busy!
The geeks complied quickly.
The AJC’s Jim Galloway takes it from there:
U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss confirmed Tuesday that he investigating whether one of his staffers left a threatening slur on an Internet discussion of the right of gays and lesbians to serve openly in the U.S. military.
“We have seen the allegations and are moving quickly to understand the facts. This office has not and will not tolerate any activity of the sort alleged,” Chambliss spokeswoman Bronwyn Lance Chester said. “Once we have ascertained whether these claims are true, we will take the appropriate steps.” […]
Blog author Joseph Jervis of New York City used the Internet Protocol address attached to the comment to trace the slur to “the neighborhood” of Chambliss’ office in Atlanta. Readers quickly helped.
“Among the fields in which gay people are over-represented is the IT field,” said Jervis, who is also the East Coast editor for Pride magazine.
Galloway cautioned Joe that Chambliss is not taking responsibility and that “further confirmation, and hopefully, the identity of the commenter, should come tomorrow.”
Also out of Atlanta today, a lawsuit filed by two men alleging that anti-gay pastor Eddie Long coerced them into sex.
The men’s attorney, B.J. Bernstein, is perhaps best known for winning the release of Genarlow Wilson, the Georgia man who served over 2 years in prison for consensual sex with a fifteen year-old girl when he was just seventeen. She has a history of some activism on behalf of teens around sex.
Donna Brazille cautions that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions about long, “…let us hear both sides. This is a season of distrust, anger and recrimination. Hold on for now.”
