Hawaii Struck By Earthquake
The New York Times reports that Hawaii has been ‘shaken’ by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3. ‘with at least a dozen aftershocks’, one of them measured 5.8. Logically “the quakes immediately set off fears of a tsunami.” However, ‘the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a report saying that “no tsunami is expectedâ€? as a result of the quakes.’

Power was out in many areas. Emergency management officials were urging residents and others to stay put if they could, to keep roadways open for emergency vehicles.

KITV Channel 4 in Honolulu reported that Kona Hospital had sustained significant damage, and that officials were evacuating patients and workers.

The station said that because power was out, drivers on the roads were advised “to treat every intersection as four-way stops because there are no traffic lights.�
