Death of a Promising Politician in Washington

Four people have appeared in court to be arraigned with the murder in Washington of Alan Senitt, a young Jewish activist from London widely tipped to go on to a high-flying political career, says the Independent.

“Even though Washington has grown inured to violent crime – mostly drug-related but which has not spared even rich enclaves like Georgetown – the murder of Mr Senitt has come as a particular shock.

“Mr Senitt had twice been elected head of the Union of Jewish students, representing 5,000 college students. He subsequently worked for Lord Janner of Braunstone, formerly the Labour MP Greville Janner, a leading member of the Jewish community.

“After standing as a Labour candidate in local elections in the Edgware ward in north London, Mr Senitt moved to the US and was about to start working for Mark Warner, the former Democratic governor of Virginia who is expected to compete for the party’s 2008 presidential nomination.

“The move, said the Board of Deputies of British Jews as it expressed its deep mourning for Mr Senitt’s death, ‘should have been a further step in a glittering career’.”

I really don’t know how to comment on this. There are many reasons why this crime occurred, or any such crime for that matter. It sounds like a gang roaming around outside their own neighborhood. Could have happened anywhere in the U.S., or anywhere in the world. On the day this happened, how many people in the country or the world were killed as a result of crime?

Salmenio, about 42 people die per day in the United States in some way related to violence. Note that actual homicides do not make up the entirety of the above number : it includes many occurences of self-defense or other justifiable shootings.

I’d wager this wouldn’t have happened if he had some way to defend himself.

He did, he had his brain. Must have been a bad choice.

Let me just add that I live near this area. Georgetown is supposed to be the safe, high-rent part of town, and if you go there you normally would not worry about being attacked and murdered.
