From the Times:
An indictment this month from one of Spain’s top judges assert[s] that Venezuelan intelligence officials were involved in training Basque separatists and Colombian guerrillas in Venezuela…Judge Velasco’s indictment, based largely on testimony from demobilized FARC guerrillas and FARC computer files obtained by Colombia’s army, describes a 20-day training course led by [Basque exile Arturo] Cubillas in 2007 in Apure State for 13 FARC rebels and 7 members of a smaller Venezuelan guerrilla group, the Bolivarian Liberation Front.
Judge Velasco said Mr. Cubillas organized the course, with the assistance of other ETA militants, in which they instructed the guerrillas on explosives. The indictment described how Mr. Cubillas was accompanied by a Venezuelan official identified as a military intelligence agent.
Venezuelan intelligence certainly keeps itself busy. Perhaps it’s all the help they’re getting from Cuba. As Jamie Daremblum writes,
Chávez currently sends Cuba more than 36 million barrels of subsidized oil a year—roughly half of all that Cuba consumes…Havana’s strong support for Chávez is driven far more by economic necessity than leftist ideology. Without Chávez, the weak Cuban economy would collapse and the Castro regime along with it.
One can only hope.
This is no surprise. Chavez is a threat to destabilize and ruin much of the hemisphere.
He's asking for an “errant” cruise missile to come his way someday. Maybe to destroy a Kalashnikov factory. If any US citizen is hurt by indirectly as well as directly by him, he should pay, big time. We should do an air strike with manned aircraft (a macho-psychological point being made) buzzing his palace as well as bombing the factory or factories, and other sources of trouble. If we didn't depend on his oil, destroy his state-run refineries, too. Cut off his oil. (We should take the initiative in this way with Iran if need be, too, so they may be forced not to destroy other Gulf area refinieries and import the oil they'll need. Incidentally, if ObamaCo had any often-lacking brains, we could somehow resolve Iran's misconduct, start importing Iranian petroleum, and then feel free any time to bomb Chavez's refineries.)
