For The Whales

I was flipping channels today when I caught the story of an anti-whale hunting activist being detained by the Japanese.

Of course the Japanese have every right to enforce their laws, but I have to say that I find whale hunting to be one of the more disgusting acts that human beings carry out.

There are some good groups who are fighting this practice. Please consider giving them a donation

The idiot actually boarded a vessel and claimed he was there to arrest the captain.

I've seen an ad for some activists on a vessel that harrass and even risk collision with vessels. Typical smart-ass stuff on the radio, too: “You're too close to my vessel!” “You're too close to the whale.”

These people are, and should be treated as, pirates.

Yes, pirates trying to prevent another species from going extinct.

    Nice, DLS. You've outdone yourself.

Yes, pirates — the point here.

Not the same as the Somali version, but pirates nevetheless.

At least he wasn't shot and thrown overboard by the Japanese.

If the whaling laws are a travesty- why should the activist respect them?
Many people came to DC to get arrested in order to protest apartheid during the 80's. Civil disobedience in the case of moral turpitude is justified.

    DLS..

As I've said they had a right to arrest.

But you've not commented on the practice of whale hunting itself.

  6. kritt11 says:

It makes me ill- its such an abominable practice that the Japanese should hang their collective heads in shame for permitting it.

For the record, I don't like it (whale hunting), nor Japan's (or other nations') cheating on the laws.

On another thread Kathy started, I had some fun with it, but from there, the best link is to this T-shirt.

    Excellent graphics:

    A touching video, indeed. But…umm…one thing—those aren't whales.

Nevertheless, whaling is a disgusting practice, and the UN Law of the Sea needs to be revised to close the loophole the Japanese are currently exploiting.

  9. kathykattenburg says:

Oh my gosh! I'm so glad you said that! They're dolphins, right? That's what I thought the moment I saw them, but then I told myself I must be wrong, because what did I know about whales or dolphins?

To go off on a tangent somewhat, several years ago I became interested in the Newfoundland seal hunt through my interest in Newfoundland music and in particular Great Big Sea. Sea Shepherd has also protested the seal hunts (baby seals have been protected for a long time but older seals can still be hunted).

Suffice it to say there are always more angles to these stories than the media can put in a short article. Sealing has cultural, traditional and financial aspects that are rarely mentioned. The end of the seal hunt could well spell the end of several Newfoundland coastal towns.

Here's a link to a GBS Newfoundland trad song about sealing. “Whack for the laddie” refers to whacking a seal on the head, which is graphic but accurate.

I'm sorry, but a similar argument was made in the 1850s regarding the cotton industry. I'm not attempting to equate humans and animals, but barbarism is categorically wrong regardless of species and cannot be justified by culture, tradition, or economics.

Hi Kathy. Of course, you already nailed it. Yes, they are the largest known species of dolphin. I think if they ripped the audio and edited in a video of a pod of blues, it would be perfect.

If humans continue to rape the oceans, with no though for tomorrow or the next generation then they deserve to go extinct themselves.
