‘Sacred Bonds’ Tiger Woods Sought to Preserve Weren’t of Marriage: Le Journal de Montreal, Canada

center>

The world seems obsessed about what Tiger Woods was trying to do with his highly publicized apology. Was it more personal or was it largely public relations?

Richard Martineau, a sports columnist with Le Journal de Montreal, puzzles over this odd American ritual contrition, and thinks he’s come up with an answer.

For Le Journal de Montreal, Richard Martineau writes in part:

In communist China, citizens suspected of having criticized Mao were paraded in public with signs hanging around their necks listing the crimes they had committed. … In the Middle East, the enemies of Islam must disclose their crimes in front of the cameras before having their throats cut like animals.

In the United States, you can criticize the system with as much virulence as you like and no one bears a grudge. To the contrary: they salute your freedom of thought. But if you’re ever caught red-handed in the midst of martial infidelity, you’ll be obliged to parade yourself before the cameras, beg for the forgiveness of your wife and sob on Oprah’s shoulder.

But for Tiger, it wasn’t the sacred bonds of marriage that were at issue. It was the sacred bonds of the contracts he signed with Nike, Gatorade and Gillette. This is what he was attempting to save! You make a fool of yourself and soil the reputation of our brand? Bye bye, our marriage is annulled.”

The world is not obsessed with Tiger Woods. The world could care less. A Canadian sports writer…sure why not…putting Tiger in your article might get a couple more hits.

Do Americans even talk about Tiger anymore?

    Dear Shannonlee,

I take no pleasure in informing you of this, but according to Multichannel News, these are the numbers for those who watched the apology in real time, in other words, not counting the millions of people who watched it after the fact and on non-American stations. And this isn't counting ABC, CBS and NBC, which all carried it live: the Golf Channel placed behind Fox News Channel (1.7 rating/2.06 million viewers), ESPN (1.5/1.7 million) and CNN (0.8, 833,000), according to Nielsen, and ahead of CNBC, MSNBC and ESPN2.

Just take a look Shannonlee – there is a ton of coverage in and out of the country.

What I think is interesting is the clash of social mores. In this case, French Canadian and American.

It reminded me of this article about the Spitzer affair from the French:

“Here again, nothing out of the ordinary for an old European with broad experience in the unpredictability of human nature: like Captain Haddock, blind drunk and chairing a meeting against alcoholism, the fathers of modesty in the United States, the enemies of vice, of feminism and of the freedom of morals, invariably end up in the arms of prostitutes, their nostrils filled with cocaine and their hands in the safe. Every moralist eventually ends up falling one day into the sin he denounces: isn’t the Catholic Church itself, which advocates chastity and subjects homosexuals to public obloquy, covering up the actions of thousands of pedophile priests who rape and abuse children?”

Will…when was the apology? 20 news cycles ago?

Outside of North America…who is talking about Tiger right now? North America isn't the world. 2 billion Chinamen could care less. 1 billion Indians could care less. Europe thinks his behavior is normal. Africa doesn't have access to media. South America….still sleeping off Carnival.

The world isn't talking about Tiger right now. He may have been a blip the first weekend after his apology, but that is it. The world doesn't care.

  4. shannonlee says:

I also dumped a blip into an off thread about the EU planning to place massive sanctions on Iran. Information I would think Americans might care about….I guess we will talk about it after it happens.

  5. shannonlee says:

And I apologize for the tone….I need to chill with the tone. :)

  6. The media should stop using Tiger Woods and his family for high ratings and sales.Tiger apologized to everyone and accepted that what he did was very wrong. Tiger confirmed he needs help and that he is receiving rehab to address his issues. Tiger said he wants to regain balance in his life to save the two things that are most important to him, his wife and his children. Tiger is trying to put his life back together and he has a right to do so. It is time for the media to back off and let Tiger and his family move on with their life!!!
