Cheney probably figures that having an openly gay military will make the islamics more prone to hate and attack our troops. Every time that happens he turns a profit. So Dick Cheney's voice needs to be examined in that light.
The Devil incarnate rarely has compassion on his mind when he makes a decision to $peak out. There are few people without virtue totally. Even hardened criminals may have a glimmer of compassion if only for an animal or an object. I feel Cheney is in the category of apathic. And so, therefore, is his speaking out “on behalf of the troops” [probably putting them in more danger]. Way to go sheister..
I think Cheney, having a gay daughter, and being out of office, doesn't have to worry as much about how his opinion on this matter will effect his poll numbers. He'll never hold office again, so no worries.
When a guy like Dick Cheney stands up on an issue like this and weighs in with a position at variance to that of many of his supporters it carries a great deal more weight than ten years of squawking by Barney Frank or Nancy Pelosi. And shatters the stereotype that conservatives do not tolerate diversity of thought.

I don't like Cheney either, but to extrapolate his support for repealing don't ask, don't tell to trying to make “the Islamics more prone to hate and attack our trrops….” is almost as ludicrous and desperate a homophobe drivel as comparing human sexuality to that of beasts.
I guess all that rhapsodizing about “diversity of thought” and “shattering of stereotypes” was fun but you can come back to earth now. We're still talking about Dick Cheney. The man has a gay daughter, who he undoubtedly loves, and that is likely the sole source of his transcendental moment. While I'm glad he's on the right side of an issue for once, it's a drop in the bucket compared to all his down at the crossroads deal-making.
And I'm not fond of Silhouette, but I do feel sympathy for anyone who, believing her position moderate and rational, suddenly finds herself to the right of Dick Cheney. Yikes.
You guys and your “left” “right” and “center”. Let me guess, the islamic extremists will be less likely to attack our troops if they see on CNN that open gayness is embraced in the US military. Or no, wait, they'll be “not affected at all”.
I operate in reality-land where islamics will strike harder. Don't think this fact has escaped many a nervous enlisted out on the front lines in enemy territory…an enemy that has a zero tolerance policy for homosexuality.
Yeah, silly me! And every time we get more attacks, more engagement, Cheney turns a profit. That just must be a coincidence. He's probably just trying to stay in good with his lesbian daughter.

Your sources? Besides your homophobic imagination. (Military journals, studies, polls, anything?)
Cheney would be a hardliner if his own daughter were not gay. Remember Nancy Reagan lobbied Washington for stem cell research after her husband was stricken with Alzheimer's.
A note about McCain, his position is actually unchanged as of now..
“Obviously, Sen. McCain does not believe we should repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,'” she said. Mullen had spoken for himself when he said the policy should be repealed, not for the entire military, she said. If, after the one-year review, the Joint Chiefs agree, “then Sen. McCain would obviously consider a military leader's decision.”
The she is McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan
Obviously he is opposed, but it seems like if the joint chiefs complete their official review and reccommend it (as I think they should) he might well support a repeal. I wasn't happy with his remarks, but I don't think they can be called a full reversal at this time.
Kathy Its easy to spout ideological spleen when its a hypothetical. Once its YOUR daughter or son that totally changes your perspective.Plus, Cheney has totally been freed from any kind of party discipline- since he will never seek office again. The fact that he had nothing to lose when he was in office made him the most dangerous VP ever, and now he is just a loose cannon- firing salvos at the Obama administration at every opportunity. I believe this is less about Obama, than about the tremendous criticism that was levied against his own administration- especially during the second term.
I agree completely, kritt, with everything above. Especially the criticism part. This obsession of Cheney's has nothing to do with concern for national security. Cheney wants validation. He wants what he and his administration did to be endorsed, to get an official stamp of approval. The only way (or maybe the best way) to get that is to have Obama endorse his policies. And to a large extent he has. But it's not enough for Cheney. If you think about it in more detached, metaphorical terms, he is like Captain Ahab in Moby Dick.
Does anyone care what Cheney has to say? I don't.
I wish he would disappear into the fiery abyss he came from.

Does this mean I should be for DADT now? I'm so confused. *deadpan expression*
I didn't think I shared any opinions with Dick Cheney. Well even a stopped watch and all that…
so just because his daughter is carefree and happy he opposes dadt eh…

Dick Cheney's position on DADT has zero to do with shattering stereotypes about conservatives or diversity of thought.
Dick Cheney has a daughter who is gay. Personal experience. That's the entirety of it.
Personal experience trumps left/right every time.

Exactly.

Wow, Kathy- I love that analogy! Its so true!
