First reaction: Great. It’s about time.
President Obama and congressional leaders emerged from a rare bipartisan meeting on Tuesday pledging to work together on a range of issues, including a job-creation bill that lawmakers hope to pass this month, along with longer-term goals related to health care, trade and energy.
… The jobs bill represents an important test of whether the thaw in relations between the two parties is real. Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), both of whom walked away from health-care talks last year, have been heavily involved in drafting the legislation.
Second reaction: I’ll believe this “thaw in relations … is real” if the jobs bill passes the Senate with more than one Republican supporting it. And I’ll believe it’s sustainable if the same thing happens on health care reform.
Excuse the cynicism, but I’m from the “Show Me” State.
