Mullen Says All That Needs Saying on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

From the New York Times’ coverage of hearings related to the repeal of the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy related to whether gays and lesbians serve in the U.S. military:

On one thing, Mr. Gates, Admiral Mullen and Republicans on the committee agreed: many gay men and lesbians are serving honorably and effectively in the military today, despite a policy that has led to more than 13,000 discharges, including those of much-needed Arabic translators.

“I have served with homosexuals since 1968,” Admiral Mullen told the committee. He added, “Everybody in the military has, and we understand that.”

Is there really anything else to add?  That it’s taken more than 40 years to figure out how to allow this to become an admitted and not “they’re in denial and we’ll just play along with that denial” reality is insult on injury to the men and women who offer up their lives to protect and serve the rest of us.

It's interesting to me that people of service age – usually meaning younger people, tend to have more sensible and accepting views about the subject than do many of those who are older, not in the service, and are opining from the sidelines. Based on that difference in attitudes, I think that what we're seeing here is much projecting of personal views under the guise of concern for a well functioning military. Perhaps those projections aren't even intentional, but they are certainly misguided and I believe history will bear this out.

    *******
Super! But it looks like those 13,000 discharged were of those who refused to keep quiet about what they do in their bedrooms. That seems like an awfully high number. Is it like a compulsion for them to want to tell people about their sex lives?

Since those people now in service just have to not talk about their sex lives, there shouldn't be a problem. A compulsive need to share details about one's sexual behavior is called…what's the word again? Oh, yes, “exhibitionism”. Sexual exhibitionism is illegal in most states.

  3. JSpencer says:

All they have to do is not talk about their sexual lives. What could be simpler?

What you're talking about is hardly specific to gay people, and that is an understatement if I've ever made one. Military code of conduct is what matters, not sexual orientation.

  4. Silhouette says:

    Yes, exactly…

NOBODY should be discussing their sexuality in the military at all. HomoSEXUALs are not immune to this code of conduct. Thank you.

  5. Jillmz says:

    I agree. That simple. :)

  6. Jillmz says:

Are you really suggesting that you believe that heterosexuals in the military do not display any evidence of their sexuality?

  7. Father_Time says:

What a bunch of crapola. Young people in the military are terrified that their remaining service is going to dominated by gay sickos forced upon them in the close living conditions the low ranks must live in.

Why should a general or admiral worry? They live in secluded LUXURY!

What’s next, two males kissing at the officers ball?

  8. Father_Time says:

So you are an advocate of displaying abnormal “sexuality” as you call it. If someone wants to hump a bush, oh well that’s his “sexuality”.

We should NOT condoning and legitimizing that which is abnormal, unnatural and abhorrent!

  9. Jillmz says:

I sincerely have no idea why on Earth you would make such an accusation. You want to explain your thinking?

  10. oaechief says:

F_T is just a troll that has never served in the military and is afraid of his own sexuality.

Sixty or so years ago, women in the military was not an issue. I mean there were a few but very few women in any branch of the service. So sexual activity among or between service members was not an issue. In 2010, they deploy on Navy ships and squadrons all over the world. Again, sexual activity is still not an issue, it just happens all the time. Who cares if it is hetero or homo sexual behavior.
