That’s the question being asked in today’s online dispatch from The Week.
I talked about this as a potential problem for then-Senator Obama during the 2008 campaign.
Fair or not, perceptions are usually taken as reality. The perception of the President as cool and detached may not be one he wants to foster.
I am quite please with President Obama. Today, considering New Orleans, I am quite happy that President Bush is gone. At least more poor Haitians may live where poor Americans didn't. Lot of difference a cool decider can make. They tend not to shoot their lawyers in the face either.
Of course, compared to Bush and Cheney…anyone is an improvement. I'd take 8 years of Carter over Bush ANY day…and I voted for McCain.
Not to be mean, but Haiti is not a US territory. After a month, just like after the Xmas tsunamis of 06, people will lose interest in Haiti (though repair will be ongoing) and will be worried about their problems at home. Comparing O to W is not going to wash anymore. People are still unemployed. Businesses are not hiring. If Obama is seen as distant, it will be seen as uncaring and even the most faithful will lose trust.
Like Maureen Dowd put it: Too Cool: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/10/opinion/10dow…
We could ask the Haitian people if they would like to become a territory of the United States and have'em vote on it.
I appreciate the President's THOROUGH inspection. After dubya, Dowd shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. I might also point out that we need a cool president not a another uncool pundit like her. We’ve got plenty thank you very much.
She has reamed Clinton and Bush in the past. O is just a new and inviting target for her type of humor; he is a stiff person. Laugh.
