I have been away for a little while but I have collected my thoughts about a few items that may make you want to hmmm…
1) Memphis is a great city. Beale Street has the best blues clubs in the country. Graceland was interesting but I have a question: Why is U.S. 51 named for Danny Thomas in town but Elvis Presley outside of Memphis? Is the King not good enough to have the entire road named for him?
2) Happy Veterans Day! I know it was yesterday, but as a veteran, I was too busy eating my free meals at Denny’s and Applebee’s to write yesterday. Seriously, to all of my fellow veterans, Thank You for your service.
3) The FBI is on my dump list today. How could they put the lives of our men and women in uniform in jeopardy by not telling the Army that they had Nidal Hasan under surveillance for over a year? The agents involved should be brought up on charges to prevent this kind of turf war from happening again. Bureaucratic turf wars that cost the lives of innocent people serving their country is wrong!
4) As a Baltimore Raven fan, if the Steelers and the Colts play in the playoffs, who do you root for? The Steelers or the Colts with Matt Stover as their kicker?
Here's an answer to the question in your first point…
There's already a street named for Elvis inside the city of Memphis. It's the street that runs past Graceland: Elvis Presley Blvd.
Danny Thomas Blvd. was named to honor Danny Thomas for founding St. Jude Children's Research Center in Memphis. St. Jude is an awesome non-profit hospital that provides medical care to children and funds to research cures for childhood diseases.
Notice US 51 is named Elvis Presley Boulevard where it passes Graceland, while Danny Thomas Boulevard is close to St. Jude Hospital.
I grew up just outside of Memphis, in Southaven, named so because it was south of Whitehaven, named so because that's where all the white folk moved to when the (whisper now) black folk moved into the middle of town, and then when “they” moved to Whitehaven they had to build Southaven.
Boy, what a legacy… sigh…
