The Strangest Paragraph in the History of Journalism

From page three of today’s WaPo article on Dede Scozzafava:

“There is a great song called ‘Coca Cola Cowboy’ and I believe that’s what we have here. She was a Republican as long as it enhanced her electability,” said [former House majority leader] Armey, reached while petting a goat at his Texas ranch.

Actually, that’s not the entire paragraph; it ends with the remainder of Armey’s quote, which does nothing to modify the oddity of the preceding words.

  • DLS
Armey was excellent several days earlier, in debunking the typical myths about non-liberal populism's nature and character. (monolithic social conservative "tea bagger" nonsense)
  • JSpencer
Shame on Scozzafava for caring more about her constituents than about the Palinite-Beckerhead wing of the GOP.
  • SteveK
ArMY, reached while PETting a GOAT at his Texas ranch. Hum... Now where have we heard that one before? Seems strange the Republican and their attraction to Goats.
  • Leonidas
Seems strange the Republican and their attraction to Goats.

As opposed to a political party choosing an jackass as their mascot. =P
  • Well, since I know the song, and what it refers to, and I know many people who raise goats, this just doesn't seem strange to me at all.
  • GeorgeSorwell
The subsequent paragraph is even more revealing:
In Gouverneur, the parlor game speculates about possible prizes for Scozzafava and other moderates who play the spoiler. When Scozzafava's husband returned to Mullin's restaurant for a post-election labor meeting, members asked him when he and his wife would be moving down to Florida for the cushy job the government had secured him with publicly funded General Motors.

"Brothers and sisters," a confounded McDougall told them, "I'm not going to Florida."
