Great Moments in Bad Political Optics

scozzo_hoffman.jpgWe’ve already held a number of discussions here about the campaign of NY23 Republican hopeful Dede Scozzafava and her dimming prospects for a seat in Congress. However, today marks one of the more strange moments in political history. As highlighted by Allahpundit at Hot Air, the candidate apparently does not have anyone advising her with the political chops required for such a race. Apparently, somebody in her office thought it would be a nifty idea for her to hold a presser outside the office of one of her opponents, NY Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. This led to the now immortalized image shown here. Dede speaks to the press and the public with a forest of signs for her opponent sprouting up behind her.

There are only a couple of races happening in this off year which will attract national attention, and her team needed to be ready for that. Calling the police on a reporter was bad enough, but this curious decision really puts the quality of her staff on display.

For more on Dede’s background, however, see TMV’s correspondent Dennis Sanders earlier today.

Looks like +1 House seats for the DNC.

    Go tea party!

    All politics is local.

It's national players like the Club for the Growth that are trying to defeat Scozzafava.

Scozzafava was selected as the candidate by her local Republican Party committee. Presumably, they would like to win the election. Presumably, they would like to keep this seat Republican. Presumably, they remember the special election held in upstate New York earlier this year, where an unknown Democrat beat a well-known Republican even though the district had a majority of registered Republicans. Presumably, they picked someone moderate in order to better satisfy their local electorate.

The viability of moderate Republican candidates is being destroyed by so-called conservative Republicans.

Scozzafava's defeat would mean the end of moderate Republicans as viable candidates even in liberal states like New York.

It's actions like this that make me wonder whether the Club for Growth are actually secret DNC agents.
