Brooks declares war on talk radio

David Brooks’ column this morning is a guns-blazing assault on Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and the rest of the conservative talk radio-sphere.

As Pete noted earlier, Brooks also has harsh words for those Republicans who ignorantly overestimate the influence of Limbaugh & Co. Let the record also show that Brooks is no more fond of “cynical Democrats, who love to claim that Rush Limbaugh controls the G.O.P.” Those cynics include White House spokesman Robert Gibbs, who presumably takes his orders from Barack Obama.

Now let me be clear about where I stand. I don’t listen to talk radio. I generally trust David Brooks’ instincts, but I won’t pretend I know enough to agree or disagree this time around. Limbaugh & Co. only make it onto my radar screen when the mainstream media cover them, which happens either when one of them says something outrageous or when the White House decides to crown them as the leaders of the GOP.

  2. Well I'd agree with most of what he has to say except the end about the rise of the talk jocks co-inciding with the downfall of the GOP. Those guys have been doing their thing mostly for over 10 years. I think to dismiss them now because the GOP got its ass handed to it last election is short sighted. How bout the effects they had on the 2000,2002,2004,2006 elections? I think before G. W. Bush made such a colossal mess of things they had quite a bit of pull.

I'm more concerned about the uber partisans in office than the ones in the radio, on TV or in the newspaper. That goes for both sides although it would be nice to be rid of Beck, Limbaugh, O'Reily, Maddow, Olbermann, etc.

I agree, although I'd like to keep Beck. When I research the spinning crap that the rest spew, it's mostly that – spin. When I research comments by Beck, they are typically true and based upon fact. Besides, he's more of a libertarian than a GOP stooge. I think that's why I like him.

LOL Glenn Beck is just a dry drunk former morning shock jock. Most of his shtick is just hyperbole from his drug induced BS as a shock jock. Give me Bacevich or Larson over a rodeo clown any day…

According to Beck himself, he's admitted to exactly what you said.
He claims to have changed his way of life in that respect. He has embraced faith and has started to look at the “soul” of America.

Could that be a facade? Yes, it could be.
But I cannot judge a man's heart, nor should I in accordance with my faith.
I'm taking him at his word, until I find out otherwise.

Indeed. And what is really being done here? Are we (likely!) seeing more attempts by GOP insiders and DC fixtures who presume to define “conservatives” to be “Democrats Lite” and be nice and accomodating? That has never been rewarding, only encouraged more Dem “bi-partisanship” (do it our way, or else!) than before. Are the party insiders trying to appeal to more childish people (hooked on government entitlements — the vast middle class phenomenon that is the real giant, as entitlements are the real giant with federal size, scope, and finance) and the less competent or less principled, as a way to reclaim more votes? The righty talkers (filling a vacuum and a great, unmet market created ages ago by the liberal media) are demons of the worst on the Left; righties shouldn't choose to stoop low and imitate the lefties.

I find Beck somewhat annoying the way I used to find Neal Boortz (sp?) annoying (loud, pushy) but Beck seems to be filling the #2 role under Limbaugh right now and seems to have taken over the deliberately provocative and offensive role left vacant (why?) by Ann Coulter. The others, yes, I find as I call them, “cookie-cutter”-ish. As a side note, I've wondered specifically if Sean Hannity (loud, very partisan) is jealous that Beck is widely seen as #2 (reflected in current demonization role) rather than he (Hannity).
