Obama’s September 11 Proclamation. Another Act of Treason?

September11

In an official White House announcement yesterday, the President of the United States proclaimed September 11, 2009, as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks against the United States that occurred on September 11, 2001, and invited the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance.

He called upon the people of the United States to participate in community service in honor of those our Nation lost, to observe this day with other ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

His proclamation starts as follows:

Through the twisted steel of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the scarred walls of the Pentagon, and the smoky wreckage in a field in southwest Pennsylvania, the patriotism and resiliency of the American people shone brightly on September 11, 2001. We stood as one people, united in our common humanity and shared sorrow. We grieved for those who perished and remembered what brought us together as Americans.

Today, we honor the lives we lost 8 years ago.

The Proclamation continues:

As we pay tribute to loved ones, friends, fellow citizens, and all who died, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideas and ideals that united Americans in the aftermath of the attacks. We must apprehend all those who perpetrated these heinous crimes, seek justice for those who were killed, and defend against all threats to our national security. We must also recommit ourselves to our founding principles. September 11 reminds us that our fate as individuals is tied to that of our Nation. Our democracy is strengthened when we uphold the freedoms upon which our Nation was built: equality, justice, liberty, and democracy. These values exemplify the patriotism and sacrifice we commemorate today.

In that same spirit of patriotism, I call upon all Americans to join in service and honor the lives we lost, the heroes who responded in our hour of need, and the brave men and women in uniform who continue to protect our country at home and abroad. In April, I was proud to sign the bipartisan Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. Originated by the family members of those who lost loved ones on 9/11, the National Day of Service and Remembrance is an opportunity to salute the heroes of 9/11, recapture the spirit of unity and compassion that inspired our Nation following the attacks, and rededicate ourselves to sustained service to our communities.

The President recounts that, throughout the summer, people of all ages and backgrounds came together to lend a helping hand in their communities through United We Serve. And he urges “As this summer of service draws to an end, we renew the call to engage in meaningful service activities and stay engaged with those projects throughout the year. Working together, we can usher in a new era in which volunteering and service is a way of life for all Americans. Deriving strength from tragedy, we can write the next great chapter in our Nation’s history and ensure that future generations continue to enjoy the promise of America.”

Innocent enough? Perhap even patriotic?

Reminiscent of the vicious attacks the President endured for his plans to tell our children to stay in school, to study hard, etc., some again see sinister motives and intentions behind this proclamation.

For example, “Obama means to erase the meaning of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks from the American psyche and convert September 11 into a day of leftist self-congratulation, the advance of government power, and Muslim pandering,” and “The Obama White House is behind a cynical, coldly calculated political effort to erase the meaning of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks from the American psyche and convert Sept. 11 into a day of leftist celebration and statist idolatry.”

Don’t believe me?

I'm sorry, but I'm too busy worshiping the state to think about this post.

Be back later if my righteous and protective overseers think it is good for me.

Treason, No. A mistake, Yes. He should have left 9/11 as a day to remember 9-11 day only or some kinda tribute to 9-11 victims and emergency workers. I understand the sentiments of a national day of service, and while those are fine, I do feel it dilutes from the solemness of the occasion.

What a fool. How did you get to be a “bigshot” at TMV? I think ypu ought to be demoted to us snipers.

From the American Spectator: “The plan is to turn a “day of fear” that helps Republicans into a day of activism called the National Day of Service that helps the left. In other words, nihilistic liberals are planning to drain 9/11 of all meaning.”

Excuse me but America was attacked. Not just Republicans. And this shows that at least some Republicans DO use 9/11 for political benefit.

However I think the linked articles are not indicative of what most Republicans believe. At least I hope most Republicans don't agree with these statements.

Of course I guess the people who are attacking Obama for wanting the remember the people who died on 9/11 are the same conservatives who forget that Bush's solution for Americans to help the troops fight the terrorists in Iraq was for Americans to go shopping.

Vey, am I understanding what you wrote correctly? Are you calling Dorian a “fool”?

  6. Yes vey9, I'm trying to get what you are saying. Are you being sarcastic? Etc?

    Leonidas:

“I understand the sentiments of a national day of service, and while those are fine, I do feel it dilutes from the solemness of the occasion.”

Fair enough, Leonidas. Others have expressed similar sentiments—but a far cry from claims of “desecrating” and “erasing the meaning of” 9/11

And while that is true, I think the whole idea was poorly thought out. The reaction by many, appropriate or not was foreseeable. Why divide the country further on a day that should be about uniting the nation and honoring its heroes.

I think vey9 just missed the sarcasm in Dorian's post. As a person who often gets misinterpreted due to non-obvious sarcasm, I understand.

Yes lets not desecrate 12-07-41 by asking those not directly in the fight to sacrifice at home. Victory Gardens and tin and rubber recycling is pinko commie socialist…

  11. Myself, I find the right's reaction to be absurdly over-the-top. I also think that if Obama's preferred brand of toilet paper became public knowledge, we'd be hearing about the nefarious connections between “promoting” that brand and a dark, dastardly plot to undermine Life, Liberty, and The American Way.

    >>Myself, I find the right's reaction to be absurdly over-the-top.

Yes, it is reactionary buffoonery from the extremist fringe on the far right wing that makes it impossible to take *anything* from *anyone* on the right seriously. What next, calling the President a treasonous traitor and commie-loving defeatist because of the color of his eyes? What other inanity will they think of next?

  13. vey9

“I think vey9 just missed the sarcasm in Dorian's post. As a person who often gets misinterpreted due to non-obvious sarcasm, I understand.”

That's right. Sorry for the statement. I was confused.

No problem, vey9. My wife misinterprets my sarcasm (and non-sarcasm) all the time

  17. DLS

Any reference to “national service” or to anything hinting at collectivism was a serious blunder.

Alarm at criticism of it is misplaced, to say the least. It's not as if critics demanded he wear a flag lapel pin.
