Nancy and Charlie: A Love Story

Now we have the answer to yesterday’s question. What does Nancy Pelosi plan to do about Charlie Rangel and his curiously poor memory when it comes to matters of finance? Not a whole lot.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will let Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.) keep his chairmanship despite his failing to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in assets on federal disclosure forms, according to Democratic aides.

The chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee’s latest misstep has received strong media scrutiny and prompted good-government watchdog groups to call for a special counsel investigation.

Pelosi’s main complaint is that she doesn’t want to convict the man before he’s had a chance for a full investigation, based only on media reports, and there is certainly some merit to that sentiment. Anyone can make accusations against a public official. But we’re not talking about a couple of anonymous bloggers calling Rangel a skank here. There certainly seems to be more than enough information to cast a cloud on credibility. Rangel doesn’t have to resign, but much like the case of Dollar Bill Jefferson, Pelosi could have at least applied pressure to have him step aside from Ways and Means.

Most Ethical Congress Evah!

It's appears Jazz thinks we're facing a new (but much lower level) George Bush / Dick Cheney / Scooter Libby crisis… Oh my!

UPDATE: Maybe if a clever blogger had called the Libby affair the “George and Dick and Scooter Love Story” it would have been resolved sooner.

SteveK, the title “Nancy and Charlie: A Love Story” is hardly derogatory (humorous actually). And why don't you talk about the substance of Jazz's article please?

Speaker Pelosi needs to (like yesterday) ask/demand Rangel to step down from is Ways And Means post. No ifs, ands, or buts. Then you can resume “blasting Republicans for hypocrisy” somewhat. Damn right it looks like a love story because she is showing too much “luv” in her handling of this situation. There's more than enough debris around Rangel to warrant a step down.

George W. Bush and/or Dick Cheney needed to (like yesterday) ask/demand Scooter Libby to step down, too, and that was my point.

Jazz IMO (and now you) are acting as this is the first time a thing like this has ever happened. Where was he (were you) when much higher level shenanigans were going on? That was my point AND it was directed to “the substance of Jazz's article”.

Your jumping all over me and my comment says more about you and where you are coming from than it does about me.

  4. T_Steel says:

Ya know SteveK, do you have proof that I didn't care about the slimy Bush/Cheney/Libby thing? Why do you have to do that man?! I'm talking about today's issue but you have a litmus test to see if I'm down with the Bush smackdown. Not going to play that game with ya friend.

No this isn't the first time this has happened. But it stinks EVERY DAMN TIME IT DOES. So now we have Rangel and Pelosi. Not Bush/Cheney/Libby. And it stinks. So I'm saying it stinks. 'Nuff said.

  5. CStanley says:

Steve, maybe you could try explaining why writing a story about a current scandal involving a high ranking Congressman and the complete non-reaction of the current Speaker of the House (who claimed that she'd run the most ethical House ever, and has now reneged on that promise several times over) in any way would indicate that an author is acting as though this ethical lapse is the first ever of it's kind? Why would it be wrong in any way to focus on current problems?

And really, if you don't think that anyone should comment on these current problems if they aren't on record commenting on past GOP scandals (which I'm not at all sure is the case for Jazz anyway- I certainly remember a slew of criticism over the Libby affair here at TMV and don't remember Jazz being a dissenter to that)…but in any case, if people here don't comment on ethical lapses of the Dems now, then won't they lack credibility by your logic in the future if the GOP retakes Congress? Won't it be just as valid for people to then say, “Why are you acting as though this never happened before, and where were you when Nancy Pelosi accepted corruption among her party leaders?”

  6. DLS says:

Never mind the childish defensiveness and worse. Obviously the Dems have a moral problem, and obviously the Dems see nothing wrong with what they're doing, and they want to do more of the same.

  7. DLS says:

I still like the “cookie jar owner,” “It's so nice to see your [expected] deference, Mr. Capone” photo of Charlie (“I have a serious problem with pay-as-you-go”) Moneybags on the earlier thread of yours, Jazz.

  8. Jazz says:

I called for Libby's hide. I called for Duke Cunningham's hide. I called for Ted Steven's hide and we never even got him on anything in court. I also bitched about Murtha. And Dollar Bill Jefferson. And now Charlie Rangel. I'm not taking sides, Steve. Are you sure you aren't?

  9. SteveK says:

Jazz maybe I overreacted to T_Steel's comment but as the Senate actually has a functioning Ethics Committee and they are looking into it it didn't sound like much of a story to me. And, IMO, your “Love Story” title was looking for a reaction anyhow… I'd have rather left mine at two sentences.

Your link to the article at The Hill explains why I don't think it's that big a deal… yet:

Aides cited various reasons for Pelosi holding her fire.

First, she does not want to be seen as interfering with the ethics committee probe by stepping in before it reaches a conclusion.

“You do not want to undermine the bipartisan ethics committee process,” said a senior Democratic aide. “Under Republican control, the ethics panel has been broken for many years. Individuals on that committee are now committed to doing their jobs and they’re investigating all aspects.

“We don’t know where they are in the process,” the aide added.

In addition, the Speaker does not want to set the precedent of penalizing a colleague because of transgressions alleged in media reports. Rangel’s failure to disclose hundreds of thousand of dollars in assets and income, including rental income from a Harlem townhouse, were covered in recent days by The New York Times, New York Post and other publications.

“There has to be more of a standard than that,” said a second Democratic aide in reference to those reports. “She is concerned about setting a bad precedent.”

Third, there is not an obvious successor on the powerful Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over all tax issues.

Note: The third reason appears to be editorial comment from The Hill as there is no attribution to Pelosi or her office.

If the accusations against Rangel are proven true not only should he lose his chairmanship, he should lose his job and be punished to the full extent of the law.

Charlie Rangel shouldn't be leading Ways and Means, he should be practicing the traditional NYPD Perp Walk

  11. T_Steel says:

Next time I'm going to put “for the record” gosh darn it! It's all good.

I just got a splendid idea: a for the record in comment profiles. A drop down list of where a person stands. But in today's political environment, those “for the records” may be do slimy and incendiary to show.

I'm not trying to give you a bad time T_Steel.

Had I put “If the accusations against Rangel are proven true not only should he lose his chairmanship, he should lose his job and be punished to the full extent of the law” in my first comment and you put “For the record, I equate Libby, Cheney, and Rangel.” in yours this thread may not have become so touchy (touche'?) in the middle. It is all good. :-)

And, IMO, your “Love Story” title was looking for a reaction anyhow…

It got a reaction from me – an interesting mental picture I'd rather not experience again.
