Embarrassing Moments for Both Parties

Embarrassing for the Republicans: RNC Chair Michael Steele on NPR.

Embarrassing for the Democrats: Rep. Pete Stark calling moderate Dems “brain dead.”

Some of you might challenge the inclusion of one or both of these moments on this list. Some of you might argue that one is more embarrassing than the other, and they thus don’t belong on the same list. I won’t weigh in on the latter and on the former, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

    No comparison, weight-wise.

But — [nice photo, too, with the twisted Suze Orman look]

Steele being Steele or Stark being a nutcase as usual, I think tie

though i think steele is about as sharp as a brick, the second is unquestionably (in my mind) worse. sure, both are questioning someone's intelligence; but steele simply said something stupid because he didn't know how to defend himself. pete stark is, simply put, a jerk.

the dems are having a time of it because of the broader consensus of their party — it's not passe yet to alienate your centrists (though of course the far-left is working on it), and the GOP's very vocal far-rights publicly flog their moderates to keep them in line; and since everyone is scared straight, they're all on the same page. yeesh.

but what of it? politicos of both parties acting the fool. i don't think there's a monopoly on it.

I'm sure we could all play the game of “Saying Stupid Things” oneupsmanship – there's plenty to go around on both sides. For every time Biden sticks both his feet in his mouth, we could just as easily find an example of Boehner catching a case of the 'mouth diarrhea', or for every boneheaded word out of Pelosi, there's an equally off-putting falsehoold from Cantor. Seriously now, do we really need to play this game?

Here's my favorite example of embarrassing politically-charged commentary I ran across this morning: Where a republican mailer is trying to push a new meme, suggesting that health care will be denied to republicans based on their political affiliation: http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2009/08/…

  6. RevDave says:

Who can understand what Steele is saying? He is totally contradictory in just about everything he says. While Stark is crass, is what he is saying not true? They are political whores.

  7. DLS says:

Stark is obviously worse, not necessarily because of his reputation (those outside California may not have known or cared what he has done in many prior years), but because it's representative of the nature of the lib Dems' increasingly running amok once given the reins of power in Washington, as well as demonstrating the typical nature of the “pro” side of their health care effort, as well as their current frustration at encountering problems and public opposition to it.

Steele merely exemplified the current continued dysfunction of the GOP. (The Dems are behaving improperly in Congress with respect to the Republicans, but the GOP dysfunctionality remains the central issue and problem with that party.)

  8. DLS says:

“it's not passe yet to alienate your centrists (though of course the far-left is working on it)”

That is the most relevent feature currently of the “progress” the Dems have been making this year, with health care on the brink of becoming Mission Accomplished.

  9. ChrisWWW says:

    DLS,
Steele is lying out of both ends in an effort to deceive the public, while Stark is just challenging other politicians.

  10. GreenDreams says:

What a surprise! DLS thinks the “lefties” are worse. Uh, Steele is the head of the GOP, trying to have it both ways. Lambast Obama for being for Medicare, while lambasting Obama for trying to cut the cost of Medicare. Pathetic.

  11. DLS says:

“Uh, Steele is the head of the GOP, trying to have it both ways. “

Steele is exemplifying current GOP dysfunctionality. (and neglecting common GOP reform ideas)

    “Pathetic.”

Not only Steele but the GOP in general. (That's despite being deliberately sidelined in Congress.)

Meanwhile, insofar as the real players and the real misconduct (all year, increasingly worse) goes:

Stark is behaving worse, as are the other Dems he's exemplifying. That includes Obama lately.

Of course, given that the Dems are failing and they are getting increasingly desperate.

I await with interest how Obama will engage in damage control and if he reforms if not restarts things.

  12. Leonidas says:

The Far left and the far right, birds of a feather.
