Wires Suck: Eric Giler Demos Witricity

Ted Talks:

Eric Giler wants to untangle our wired lives with cable-free electric power. Here, he covers what this sci-fi tech offers, and demos MIT’s breakthrough version, WiTricity [Wikipedia entry] — a near-to-market invention that may soon recharge your cell phone, car, pacemaker.

Endgadget:

What started out as an MIT project two years ago has now progressed into a full-fledged company — ladies and gentlemen, meet WiTricity Corp [link]… Based on magnetic induction, the magical technology is apparently mature enough to be deployed in the relatively near future… Also of note, Intel is hard at work developing the original concept, and if the parallel engineering of the same idea by two companies isn’t enough to get your skepticism dialed down and your browser to the [BBC video below], what is?

He’s promising wireless power within 18 months:

I think the new Palm Pre cell phone uses a form of this technology to recharge its battery. In its case, you still plug a device called a "puck" since it looks like a hockey puck into a wall or USB outlet on a computer. Then you place the Pre on the puck and it recharges the battery. Nothing is actually plugged into the device, you just set it on top of the puck.

    EDIT: Found a link.. http://www.palm.com/us/products/accessories/tou...

    david,
You should watch the movie. It's like what you said the Pre does and I have a toothbrush that charges the same way that is at least 10 years old, but this is much bigger. He talks about radiating whole rooms, not just tiny spots.
