Oscar Mayer, Legendary Hot Dog King, Dead At 95

OscarMeyerBoeing.jpg

Daily Finance:

Oscar G. Mayer, who transformed his family business into one of the the world’s largest meat processors, died Monday. He was 95.

The fact that most of the public probably did not know that “Oscar Mayer” was a real person — actually he was the third member of his family to have that name — was fine with him, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. He liked his anonymity, even as his company was at one time the largest private employer in the Madison area.

For a certain generation of Americans, this is a jingle that accompanied their childhood:

Oscar Mayer was bought by General Foods in 1981, and later by Kraft Foods. Kraft has set up a WienerMobile home page and a Hot Dogger Blog. Check it out. More fun photos at Flickr. My pick:

Good job, Joe. I saw this story reported here in Detroit metro earlier today; I wonder to what extent the family keeps ownership of the company to itself and what the size of the quiet family fortune is.

Good job in particular as this is a refreshing change from the all-too-commonplace fare lately on this site.

Thanks D! I've looked a bit for ownership info but got sidetracked by WeinerMobiles! What I found is added to the post.

Hmmm -- Oscar Meyer and Hooters...

I'm a family member. The family doesn't own the company anymore - sold to General Foods in 1981, then to Kraft, and is now part of Phillip Morris/Altria.

As you're a food activist (or at least a Pollard fan), Joe, I kept quiet about any "Big Food" references.

Pollan (no, I don't think Pollan is a traitor)

I never ate a decent Oscar Meyer hot dog. Overpriced and bland as hell. Now, Nathan's on Times Square in the 70s made a great dog at about half the price.

Joe in Hell -- Nathan's still makes hot dogs you can get in the Northeast. They've even available on rest stops on I-95.

My preference typically has been for kosher hot dogs. Don't have to be a food faddist to have preferences.
  • RIP Oscar Mayer!

    The Wienermobile will live on!
