Washington Post Newspaper Sh— In Its Own Mess Kit

Please excuse me, I’m a military USAF wife for twenty-one years, and I’ve heard all cuss words, even those not yet invented. I rarely swear… except when something is so outrageous that only the Saxon mean can tell it like it is. In military talk, we say about stump stupid acts; Never, ever sh– where you eat, and especially, Do not sh– in your mess kit.

But today the Washington Post Newspaper is trying to not only clean the immense fecal pile off their plates, but also to spray perfume all over the place so hoping their tell-tale clinging stink will simply go away.

They want to call it all merely a gaffe. It’s an abomination. To us. To we who depend on the press’s honesty, unbiasedness, and ETHICS… which include, avoiding even the APPEARANCE of conflict of interest.

Seems WaPo sent out a flyer/ invitation to lobbyists that reads like this: “Underwriting Opportunity: An evening with the right people can alter the debate,” says the one-page flier. “Underwrite and participate in this intimate and exclusive Washington Post Salon, an off-the-record dinner and discussion at the home of CEO and Publisher Katharine Weymouth. … Bring your organization’s CEO or executive director literally to the table. Interact with key Obama administration and congressional leaders.”

Press soliciting movers and shakers for press access? It seems there is a dollar cost attached to get close to WaPo too. At this moment, the WaPo has cancelled their ’salon’ at the chief editor’s lavish home… and like I said, everyone over there has out their SOS and Bon Ami trying to mediate the smell they themselves laid down in enormous dog piles.

Read more here by Mike Allen & Michael Calderone, fine English and Italiano guys at Politico:

Here’s the thing: I have loved newspapers and defended them since I could read. I have covered the demise of the Scripps Howard paper, the 150 year old Rocky Mountain News; the Boston Globe and its investigative reporters, par excellence, now badly treated as the red-headed stepchild of the NYT corp; The WSJ when overtaken by King Rupert with an ‘off with their heads’ of some of the most talented writers and editors ever; the takeover of the LAT and same guillotine crashing of the talent going on there; the sliding into the red ink by the venerable Chi Trib, and onward.

But not upward re the Washington Post today.

Would Katherine Graham be turning over in her grave? I hope she stands up in her grave and staggers forth slinging sand and bandages to shriek endlessly at this grotesque stupidity, this public display of how the promise to the people about the sanctity of the objectivity of the press… has been broken today, smashed to smithereens.

Somewhere in the bosom of WaPo it seems there is a heart that is not filled with light, that craps on the ideal of a powerful and objective press, that cares nothing about investigating all balls out… but rather in inviting to a genteel backrub laid out with golden plates, much flowing wine to loosen restraints, and good food to relax the revelers… that is, the very lobbyists/politicos/ agents/ WaPo is supposed to be covering with acuity, not alacrity.

And this foremost: I mean really foremost… after this day, never ever ought any political sidewinder bluster and posture that our military soldiers, sons and daughters, fathers and mothers all… are fighting and dying so we in the Yourknighted States of ‘Merica, can have a free press… when in fact, as of today, we see, the press apparently not only can be bought, it is put out to the highest bidders.

So dont.
Just dont.

Wrote to our managing editor and our editor in chief earlier today, re whether I could/ ought use this word in the headline, not meaning to be offensive with it, but as I mentioned, I think some rare matters are so, well, the s word with a y on the end, that they can barely be stated in anything less than a bit of Saxonese. … One ed has an autoresponder saying they are on vacation, the other is at their day job. I may have to change the headline later when I hear back. I apologize in advance if the word offended.

They blamed it on the marketing department. Yeah, like ANYONE but the most pathetic apologist will believe that line of crap.

I think the title is perfect btw!

Oh, and the White House is playing make believe too. The Post would have never made this offer without first getting RSVP's from the White House's "key insiders".

Just when I thought no one could go lower than the Huff Post...in steps these idiots.

Oh Sh*t, dr. e. I hope the FCC doesn't come down hard... (just kididng!!)

I would have used "que merde" myself (just kidding, too)

  • Good title, splains it well. lol. It strikes me funny, that the Washington Post didn't back off this until they new they were caught dead to rights.
  • Ghostdreams
This just proves what I was thinking for ...at least the last two years.
Something at the WPost has gone terribly awry! :(
    Speaking of bad journalism ..
Has anyone else noticed that we seem to be getting a lot more editorials than we receive actual news reports?
Worse, anyone else noticed that a lot of people don't seem to notice the difference between the two?

    Thanks for the info Doc!

Nope, no bias in the press (except evil Fox). Move along, you looky-loos.
  • AR,
There is bias in other media outlets. But other than 3 hours of MSNBC programming, it's all conservative.

Just take a look at who is on the WaPo editorial staff. It's like a neocon all-star lineup.
  • spirasol
Hey hats off to the truth teller. YES, it is that way. No, not just now and not just because the WAPA does it. Why do you think anyone interested in the journalism now looks to the web?

In fact, the corruption is rapidly consuming the root. Journo schools are graduating corporate journos just like investigative academics lose their tenure unless they tow the line. Even social work, an occupation dear to my heart, long ago had their more progressive and socialistic agendas replaced by those of the heath care providers (read insurance companies). It's been going on for at least a decade, at least since Reagan......eating away whole pieces of the fabric of society.

They say the Banks own the government. No? General Smedley Butler says the military exists for the primary purpose of protecting corporate entities on foreign soil. Did the US Govt. have anything to do with the Honduran coup? Well, yeaaaaaaaaaaa! All the major oil companies are in Iraq holding bidding contests on who will run Iraqi oil. Who will represent the Iraqi people about their most valuable resource? NONE! And why is Israel allowed to run concentration camps and kidnap ships in international waters carrying supplies for Gaza.

Their are investigative reporters reporting on all these issues....but for the most part.......you won't find them in your local or regional paper.......You want the NEWS, -- watch Colbert & Stewart and yes the web bloggers. It is important to understand that the real news is not supported.......which means our democracy better resembles an oligarchy.

ChrisWWW - dude, turn me on to your connection. You are obviously getting some WAY awesome drugs.

What you said is only true if you define 'conservative' as to the right of Olbernmann.
  • casualobserver
After reading Chris' posts for the last three years, I am willing to concede he is even left of Olberman, so I understand his comment.

I believe him to view the corporate form of ownership as an evil wrought on society and I suspect he may also not even be fully comfortable with the notion of private ownership at all.

Media is looking for way to make money. They will use and this case abuse what is part of the core business. Let us face it, if we want facts in news it is hard to find. When we do find them we should look at them with healthy skepticism, they have become nothing more then a big conglomerate spin doctor. Media has an objective and it is their own survival, when people need to eat they will do almost anything. The truth is the media business model is outdated and so we are seeing a dying business model. It will get ugly.
  • Paging Katharine Graham. Katharine Graham, please pick up the white courtesy phone for a message.
  • Sea_Change
So after working for media I can tell you money like all businesses is a prime concern. It becomes difficult to take the high road when you have shrinking margins in a future that looks bleak. Something that is difficult for Washington Post is that they are looking for a ways to stay afloat and just to survive in the market. This may become difficult since the ability to distribute information have become increasingly fluid. While a company like the Washington Post has the big brand this is probably the only real competitive advantage. Great minds do not need a brand to hang their hat on; they can become their own brand and this is what's happening.

Washington Post would say any old Joe reporting lacks credibility, this may be true however credibility is something that is established. Individual will establish credibility as they gain a following. Individual talent now can bypass the established media.

Agreed that readers and viewers will have to weed through more junk however I question if it's really that much different than reading through bad articles auto advertisements and a host of other stuff you really didn't want from goal your newspaper television station and radio stations.

People hold onto these brands as security blankets but as new media namely the Internet ...people will grow and let go of the security of old crusty media.

thanks SeaChange; appreciate your perspective, esp re credibility and the funny-smart comment about (paraphrased) whole forests being killed off in order to ink up bad writing, auto adverts etc.

hope you are writing still. Are you?

    thanks.
