Ex-Beatle McCartney For Meatless Mondays

Paul_McCartney_&_Bono_Live8_1.jpg

The ex-Beatles pop music sensation Sir Paul McCartney and his two daughters are avidly campaigning for meatless Mondays to “reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the world’s livestock, among the most serious contributors to global warming.”

The Independent reports: “The McCartneys have attracted support from across the worlds of showbusiness, science, business and the environment. The singer Chris Martin, Hollywood stars Kevin Spacey and Woody Harrelson, actress Joanna Lumley and Sir Richard Branson are advocating meat-free Mondays.

“Support has also come from comedians Ricky Gervais, David Walliams and Matt Lucas, the poet Benjamin Zephaniah and Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman.

“Another supporter, Sir David King, the Government’s former chief scientist, said: ‘The carbon and water footprints associated with producing beef are about 20 times larger than maize production. Eating less meat will help the environment.’

Have a look at the Meatless Monday YouTube video here…

“Until the late Middle Ages, that was already standard practice throughout Europe. The Christian majority then abstained from meat each week as a matter of holy obligation, whether or not they could afford it.

Lord Hanuman(Interestingly, in India millions of Hindu followers of Lord Hanuman, of the legendary epic Ramayana fame, abstain from eating meat on Tuesdays. Even Muslim butchers close shop on Tuesdays to honour this Hindu sentiment.) See here for Hanuman film…

“The UN and Britain are concerned about the environmental impact of livestock, although the Government has shied away from urging people to eat less meat.

“Vast swathes of the Amazon rainforest are being cut down to make way for cattle ranches and to grow soy for feed. Belching from cows emits vast amounts of methane, which has 21 times the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide.” More here…

The Australian government is encouraging people to eat kangaroo meat instead of cattle and sheep meat. (See here…)

Good idea, we've had meatless meals from 3-5 times a week now for many years. It helps keep the body in good shape.

The earth can use a break too. I'd be down for Monday-Wednesday-Friday meatless but baby steps for the cheeseburger crowd I suppose..

How about the rock starts give up the private jets, the limos, and the massive convoys used for tours. I find it humours that people who have massive carbon footprints are going to make an insignificant choice in order to lower their carbon emissions.

Hopefully the little leftist celebs aren't so dishonest with themselves (and others) as to feel morally superior (a common opposite-of-the-truth fault they exhibit).

This is just another leftie-celeb posturing moment. I don't know to what extent it may be related to one of the leftist childrens' current little fads, "food activism," with a new attack on meat and corporate and industrial agriculture (a 1960s regurgitation; no new "discovery" here) and to what extent it is merely the long, lamentable tainting of vegetarianism and vegan living by leftist politics as opposed to serious science and health concerns and even (serious) philosophical and ethical or moral concerns (and yes, serious environmental concerns).

How about a little conservatism about this, in this instance (as is so often) also a little maturity and wisdom? Why not simply realize once again (as many have over thousands of years, for a multitude of reasons) that

    "meat is a premium food"

and treat it accordingly, without all the silly left-political nonsense we have in place of that grown-up viewpoint that I and others prefer to have on this issue, among others?

Superdestroyer: Don't forget the banquets they would hold in conjunction with their concerts to call attention to the Poor Starving People in the Third World. Some of these celebs have flown the Concorde and it wouldn't surprise me if they had done that to get to a concert about the threat to the ozone layer.

Good lord, you guys just don't stop. Where's the lefty propaganda? Why can't someone just advocate for something they believe in? It seems that you are the one taking something that is pretty inocuous and making it out to be some vast liberal conspiracy to...I don't know what. Where is the lack of "maturity and wisdom"?

roro, you have to admit that they have a point though...lol..I caught myself giggling at superdestroyer's comment..lol..

True true. When it comes to carbon footprints, the rich cannot be topped. Yet roro is right, if he is using his influence over people to bring about change for the better, then cut him a little slack. At least he's not sitting on his yacht saying "I got mine..". So take the good where it comes..there's your wisdom..
  • Good for him. It's a resource issue. Whether or not you think methane is contributing to global climate change, the fact is that if China alone ate meat at the rate we do, it would take more than twice the resources of the planet. For the whole world to eat meat like we do? Four planet earths. And lose the self-righteous bull about celebrities. They have the ability to influence millions. None of us can get international press for our issues, so it kinda smacks of envy when you criticize those who can and do.

BTW, I'll miss that steak as much as anyone.

That Paul McCartney is taking the lead in this is a great step forward in the movement to a healthier planet by emphasizing going meatless. Similar to Meat Free Monday is the nonprofit Meatless Monday which works with Johns Hopkins’ Bloomberg School of Public Health to encourage cutting meat consumption to improve personal health while reducing our carbon footprint.
