Wired has lots more.
As I watch the very sad news of that other winter crash that didn’t work out so well, I am clear that I would prefer higher ticket prices and a well-trained, well-rested, well-paid professional flight crew to a pilot who had failed five tests.
I want a re-regulated air system.
This is an over hyped story. Odds are that you'll more likely die from an accident at home or the drive to the airport.
The key take-away, to me, is not the failed tests. Those were not recent, but in the past, and the article itself points out he had passed 6 consecutive tests since.
The real shortcoming seems to be the failure to be trained on the automatic flight safety system. The article strongly implies (although a formal declaration has not yet been made) that the pilots actively fought the system's attempt to save the airplane because they were not trained on what it was designed to do, or how to interact with it when required.
Austin, Great point. But it raises fascinating issues around which we should trust: the pilot or the computer.
